The Ukrainians fought back - on their own - for Feb and March --> defeating the Russians at the battle of Hostomel airport and the battle for Kyiv.
Because the Ukrainians showed the willingness to defend themselves, the world started saying "hey, let's send them help" - in March/April.
In the first 13 hours Ukraine stood by itself and defended itself.
