The Smearing of Clarence Thomas
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 7, 2023 6:45 pm ET | The Editorial Board

The left’s assault on the Supreme Court is continuing, and the latest front is the news that Justice Clarence Thomas has a rich friend who has hosted the Justice on his private plane, his yacht, and his vacation resort. That’s it. That’s the story. Yet this non-bombshell has triggered breathless claims that the Court must be investigated, and that Justice Thomas must resign or be impeached. Those demands give away the real political game here.

***

ProPublica, a left-leaning website, kicked off the fun with a report Thursday that Justice Thomas has a longtime friendship with Harlan Crow, a wealthy Texas real-estate developer. The intrepid reporters roamed far and wide to discover that the Justice has sometimes traveled on Mr. Crow’s “Bombardier Global 5000 jet” and that each summer the Justice and his wife spend a vacation week at Mr. Crow’s place in the Adirondacks.

The piece is loaded with words and phrases intended to convey that this is all somehow disreputable: “superyacht”; “luxury trips”; “exclusive California all-male retreat”; “sprawling ranch”; “private chefs”; “elegant accommodation”; “opulent lodge”; “lavishing the justice with gifts.” And more.

Adjectival overkill is the method of bad polemicists who don’t have much to report. The ProPublica writers suggest that Justice Thomas may have violated ethics rules, and they quote a couple of cherry-picked ethicists to express their dismay.

But it seems clear that the Court’s rules at the time all of this happened did not require that gifts of personal hospitality be disclosed. This includes the private plane trips. ProPublica fails to make clear to readers that the U.S. Judicial Conference recently changed its rules to require more disclosure. The new rules took effect last month.

Justice Thomas would have been obliged to disclose gifts that posed a conflict of interest involving cases that would be...

Thomas LOVES to travel the highways and byways of the United States with his large motor home. He loves meeting regular Americans from every corner of the country. Many Walmarts welcome RV travelers to park their traveling homes overnight in the large Walmart parking lots. There is a significant RV culture, a camaraderie of sharing and safety in numbers. If you have never used an RV, there are many ways to rent one for a few days, a week, or more. We have rented the insanely large ones, and some nice midsized ones. Many now have the living room and bedroom slide-out feature. Once you park, the room literally slides out from the frame, and then you have amazing floor space. Even with a simpler RV with no slide-out, it is a great way to travel. You never have to worry about finding a bathroom or hotel. For an incredible RV experience, there is a very nice, well run RV park in the Fort Bragg / Mendocino area. It is less than 1/2 mile from the Botanical Gardens. You can stay at the RV park and easily walk to the Botanical Gardens.

Imagine renting an RV, and ending up in a Walmart parking lot with Justice Thomas as your overnight neighbor. Now there is something to have on a bucket list.

When I first heard of this smear campaign a few days ago I thought, here we go as they try to keep Trump out of running and may railroad him into prison and now their goal of undermining or packing the Supreme Court starts with a trashing of their hated Justice Thomas who is a black man off the Dem reservation.

Then maybe “DeSantis scandal says MSNBC” and more.

Dangerous and disturbing.

You say Biden is not a nice person. You are too kind. Biden is a criminal kingpin with a heart of stone. His dementia is an act covering up a vicious and unscrupulous scoundrel. This is most certainly the most evil public official ever to hold office in our nation’s history.

Two things. People don’t do these things without some expectation of reciprocity, now or later.

Second, wouldn’t there be tax implications for gifts of such largesse.

The ONLY reason they are doing it is because Justice Thomas is “an uppity black man who deigns to think fo rhimself, to do for himself,” instead of thinking, saying, and doing what Massa tells him.

As Candace Ownes has said, the DemoKKKrats “think they own black people — still.” They still regard blacks as property — THEIR property — and black consdervatives as stolen property. Therefore, they do not hvae to be treated like human beings, or even 3/5 of one.

They must be so p*ssed that Justice Thomas’ name isn’t on Epstein’s list. But then again it’s amazing what someone with a modicum of skill can do with Photoshop. Don’t put it past these POSs

We’ve known this since 1977, still 80 million citizens voted for him?

Is America that stupid?

Far-left turd rollers from the Dung Beetle Party don’t need rich friends with all these nice things. The BASTARDS have all of that stuff themselves paid for with the money they made up in the District of Corruption. It’s good to be the King!

Sharing a campfire with Clarence Thomas actually is on my bucket list.

I checked off a big one last year-skydiving.

So if one of the liberals did this with a billionaire donor would be no issue and there would be no tax implication questions.

Stop with the knee jerk circling of the wagons and think it through.
