The GOP's epic losing streak
Axios ^ | April 7, 2023 | Mike Allen, Zachary Basu

Posted on 04/07/2023 7:34:56 AM PDT by lasereye

If Republicans step back and look beyond the legal and social-media spectacle of Donald J. Trump, they'll see screaming political sirens everywhere they gaze.

Why it matters: The GOP's political trouble has been unfolding slowly but unmistakably, starting even before Trump's loss to Joe Biden in 2020.

  1. First, the 2018 House elections were a disaster for Republicans: Democrats had a net gain of 40 seats to take over the House — their largest gain since the post-Watergate election of 1974.

  2. Then Trump lost the presidency.

  3. Next, Republicans blew two runoff elections in Georgia and lost control of the U.S. Senate. The runoffs took place a day before Trump backers stormed the Capitol.

  4. Then, Republicans won the legal fight over abortion as Trump-appointed justices helped to ensure the reversal of Roe v. Wade. But the GOP lost a series of political battles over it afterward — a reflection of polls indicating that most Americans support abortion rights. GOP-led state legislatures have shown no signs of slowing their push to enact stricter abortion bans, suggesting continuing political backlash.

  5. Republicans put high-profile election deniers on the 2022 midterm ballot in key state and federal races — only to see several lose winnable elections.

  6. Republicans blew a chance to control the Senate by nominating too many hard-to-elect-in-a-swing-state Trump facsimiles. Their hopes of a big House majority were erased for the same reason, creating constant headaches for new Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

  7. Just this week, progressive Democrats triumphed in two of this year's most consequential elections. Brandon Johnson, a teachers' union organizer, was elected Chicago mayor. In swing state Wisconsin, Democrat-backed Janet Protasiewicz flipped the state Supreme Court to liberals in a landslide, after leaning into her support for abortion rights.

  8. Senate Republicans have been gifted a historically favorable 2024 map — but hard-right candidates who appeal to the GOP base again threaten to inject uncertainty into at least five winnable races.

  9. Trump is driving an agenda dominated by vengeance and victimhood, diverting Republicans from the inflation- and crime-centered messages that helped them in the midterms.

Reality check: Trump, if anything, is stronger and more likely to win the GOP nomination than he was after the November midterms.

Republicans in Congress have rallied to Trump's defense since his indictment.

By the numbers: For all his growing popularity among Republicans, Trump remains wildly unpopular nationally.

The bottom line: Put polls aside. How likely does it seem that Trump will do better with persuadable voters than his 2020 loss when you toss Jan. 6, a 34-count Manhattan indictment and possible federal indictments into the mix?

The path the GOP is on is reminding me of the 2010 Delaware Senate race. The unelectable Christine O'Donnell defeated Mike Castle in the Republican primary. Castle was middle of the road - he had about a 50% conservative voting record in Congress. He was about as conservative of a Republican as could realistically be elected in DE. He had twice been elected Governer in one side races - the second time with 70% of the vote. After that he was easily elected to Delaware's only House seat nine times, and would have won the general.

There were all these people, including Rush Limbaugh, who thought O'Donnell would be swept along in the red wave. Rush's political instincts were usually good, but not on that occasion. Being far more conservative than DE was not her only problem. She was seen, rightly or wrongly, as something of a kook. She was crushed by Coons in the general election, which was 100% predictable.

The 2024 President race and the 2010 DE Senate race look remarkably similar. DeSantis would have a good chance of beating Biden. Delusional Only Trumpers think Trump's going to crush Biden next year, which parallels the delusion that O'Donnell would defeat Coons. One big difference is that, unlike Castle, DeSantis is a conservative.

Is “Axios” really the Aunt Teefus newsletter? Also, do they have a Spanish version called “Adios”?

I don’t see any mention of the blatant vote fraud and election theft. Just blame Trump.

I think the GOP needs to amplify the “cuts to social security” messaging. That’s a winner.

Can they point to RINOs doing any better. Dr Oz was a terrible candidate and the black girl Bennett? was much better and likely would have won.

Yeah...it’s really easy to jump on that bandwagon. Bit more difficult to bust out the commies!

Really? I recall many people on this site said that Kathy Barnett was not ready for prime time and they were afraid if she won that primary she would have lost to Fetterman.

As I recall many people on this site were frustrated about the three choices in that Pennsylvania Senate primary.

Assistant Democrats refuse to admit they’ve ignored election fraud for 40 years, since the consent decree that only ended about 5 years ago.

It has less to do with what the voters want than it does the recent changes to voting methodology. In other words, the corruption if the electoral system.

To pretend otherwise is a time wasting exercise in naval gazing.

This article misses the entire big picture. It is the fracture in the Republican party between MAGA and never-Trumpers that is causing the Republicans to lose elections.

I'll ignore the idiotic "Trump lost the presidency" remark when it is so painfully obvious that six battleground states simultaneously shut down vote counting in the middle of the night when Trump was ahead, only to resume counting once a trove of Biden votes was somehow found or manufactured. Anybody who does not see through that and all the other shenanigans like vote harvesting and ballot stuffing (documented by the way) are not worthy of arguing with.

Trump supporters, myself included, are not motivated to go vote for Republicans any more because they never supported Trump and actually worked against him when he was in office. Then they went along with the 2020 election steal in order to get rid of Trump. And today they are silent as Trump is getting railroaded by a vindictive NYC prosecutor.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, I did not leave the Republican Party. The Republican Party left me.

Not one reference to any possibility of any cheating. For instance Lake had 10-12 point but “lost”. You are writing a story about a very odd election trend and you don’t even mention that one might think maybe just maybe something is up

DeSantis would have a good chance of beating Biden.

Listen, I'm a DeSantis guy, but he will lose by an even bigger margin than Trump would in 2024. He cannot win without Trump voters' support. I think his chances are better in 2028.

Like it or not - and I'm not necessarily sure that I do - Trump is the best hope for 2024.

And every other potential candidate on the radar will prove no more than a mild speed bump to dopey joe's re-election.

Hannity chose Oz by sliming Bennett for a solid month. She was the real MAGA candidate. Nobody was going to beat the Philly vote machine.

Very interesting and thought-provoking.

I don't disagree with your analysis of DeSantis, an exceptional governor and a true conservative ... I just don't think that in a national election he would prevail, collecting enough Electoral College votes to win over whoever the Democrat/Communist Party candidate will be ... and I would be shocked if it was FJB, as to think so would require me to believe that the Democrat/Communists are no longer interested in the White House ... which is, of course, a ludicrous conclusion.

Through their MSM branch, the Democrat/Communist Party will continue to promote DeSantis (and to eliminate Trump by any and all means possible), fully expecting they will be able to ensure DeSantis as the GOP nominee, then will do whatever it takes -- whatever it takes -- to destroy him and win the White House with their vile, America/American-hating nominee.

"...cannot win without Trump voters' support..."

I agree that if Ron lost a general election, it would likely be the fault of Trump fans' selfish behavior, learned from The Don.

Both camps should promise to support the R in the general.

What are “election deniers”
Yes, everyone knows there was an election. The question is whether the election was conducted fairly and legally.
Of course you are going to have a losing streak when elections are fixed.

Didn’t Republicans gain a super majority in the state Senate the other day? In the presidential election, Republicans gained everywhere but the Presidency, including picking up House seats, which is almost unheard of. Didn’t three million more Republicans than Democrats vote in the last mid-terms? To whom is the ultra-leftist Axios writing?
