Artificial intelligence could gain the upper hand over humanity and pose "catastrophic" risks under the Darwinian rules of evolution, a new report warns.
Evolution by natural selection could give rise to "selfish behavior" in AI as it strives to survive, author and AI researcher Dan Hendrycks argues in the new paper "Natural Selection Favors AIs over Humans."
"We argue that natural selection creates incentives for AI agents to act against human interests. Our argument relies on two observations," Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety, said in the report. "Firstly, natural selection may be a dominant force in AI development… Secondly, evolution by natural selection tends to give rise to selfish behavior."
The report comes as tech experts and leaders across the world sound the alarm on how quickly artificial intelligence is expanding in power without what they argue are adequate safeguards.

A few choice group of humans will program while the elite dine on caviar and lobster and we freeze and starve to death
“could” is BS. It will happen sooner or later. “Skynet” is in our - future count on it.
Really? There is at least one way to stop AI from unilaterally controlling everything: pull the plug.
I’ll pay attention to AI when AI starts eliminating all the redundant overpaid fat in our private & public sector corporations.
Until that day arrives its nothing but hype.
That’s what they think anyway. I’m betting it will be like the Joker scene in the Dark Knight among the elites, where the Joker gives prospects a pool cue and mentions that those who survive can join his gang.
The elites have elites and those elites look upon the lesser elites with the same sneer that they look upon us.
That's the problem with ideas and/or knowledge. Like fire (as you mention) or Eden's apple (as HH says), you can't kill it. If the U.S. tried to kill it, China would develop it to overpower the U.S.
What has been seen (or discovered) cannot be unseen.
In a way, this is the Garden of Eden all over again. And if it's dangerous enough for Musk and thousands of tech leaders to want to pause for 6 months to try to get a grip on it (the idea of which is desperately ridiculous), we can be sure this is a genuine threat to humanity.
On the bright side, those of us who believe in the Bible realize we have hit a dead end for humanity and the only thing left is action by God. So we're lucky, I guess, in that we're about to witness the last 10 minutes of the human Superbowl.
Very good movie.
I have the CD soundtrack as well.
Not like me....a T 1000 advanced prototype
Science fiction becomes reality...again.
It’s already too late, by a few years, to do anything about this. Just enjoy the ride. You’re in a science-fiction plot suddenly come to life.
I'm not in favor of that nor would I do it, but humanity is at an inflection point. Assimilate or die.
This time, I think I would rather die.
You know you are in trouble when the developer of Neurolink (neurotechnology--brain chips) is afraid of what's coming. That's like being confronted by an angry grizzly in the woods and the bear sees something behind you that makes him run away in fear.
It has been quite a while since I watched the movie.
I don’t remember the sound track being that memorable.
Is the AI named Patsy?
The human race is asking for it.
Based on my interactions with customer service phone and web bots, we don’t have anything to worry about. None of them are remotely useful at anything except annoying the customer.
A few parts are to me.
In man’s world, the only way to survive is tomerge with it. I prefer to meet my end and be resurrected to God’s world.
They will program AI to control small armed drone swarms to take non-laborers out. You might get a couple with your shotgun, but the little buggers'll getcha eventually.
However, Mexicans, injected with "Do not shoot" chips will collect our corpses to take to the rendering plant to feed the other laborers.
Remember when the future was supposed to be like Star Trek?
Same here. Did you read the rest of my comment?
Rules?
If there are RULES, then they should be observed to WORK.
