A nearly century-old law banning abortion in Michigan was repealed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Wednesday.
The 1931 law banned abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and called for the prosecution of reproductive care providers.
“Today, we’re going to take action to ensure that our statutes, our laws reflect our values and our constitution,” Whitmer said during a signing ceremony. “This is a long overdue step and it proves that when we keep fighting to protect everyone’s ability to make their own decisions about their bodies, we can win.”
The law remained unenforced for decades after the Supreme Court established a federal right to abortion with Roe v. Wade in 1973, but it was set to take effect when the high court overturned the decision last year.
“This is not a trigger law, this is a zombie law. This predates Roe, and it’s a threat of coming back to haunt us all” Whitmer said, celebrating the law’s repeal. “Who wants to watch me slay a zombie?”

Why did it take her so long?
Well, that didn’t take long.
Why don’t they just mandate abortions and get it over with?
In reality she’s the walking dead. She just doesn’t realize it yet.
Political parties can't convince their followers to abort 60 million of their own babies in my lifetime. Only cult leaders have that kind of control over their followers.
Wouldn’t be in her shoes come Judgment Day.
one of the few examples where the Hitler thing applies
putting covid infected in nursing homes served no other purpose than to eliminate the elderly who likely harbor conservative views
she silenced them with death
that was her initiation into the life

Hey Gretchen, nothing like murdering a child in the womb to top off a nice day. Democrats are horrified when a child dies by gunshot from a Trans in a school classroom but they don’t have a problem at all when a child is killed in the womb. Hard to figure.
“Especially those black ones!”
The highest among any demographic.
What values tell us to kill babies?
“She didn’t repeal it, Michigan’s elected representatives did.”
Which is the way the process should be accomplished.
“The 1931 law banned abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and called for the prosecution of reproductive care providers.”
People need to understand that it was Michigan’s law from 1931 and that’s the way everything operated until Roe. One that they ignored anyway. The 1931 Michigan law criminalized abortion except when the mother’s life was in danger, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
All this means is that it is back to the states making their own decisions by the vote of the people’s representatives for their states...not the federal law.
But Whitmer lied in her comment to try to get effect. The law they are overturning is not any more in their Constitution than it was in the US Constitution.
“Today, we’re going to take action to ensure that our statutes, our laws reflect our values and our constitution,” Whitmer said during a signing ceremony.”
She can exaggerate the term values all she wants, but saying the law related to the Constitution is a lie. It falls under the penal code.

I just wish they would tell the truth or get caught at it and publicly denounced.

Worldly.
Bad headline. The Legislature repealed it and she signed that law.
She did not repeal the law.
The representatives of the people of Michigan did that.
During the Roe v. Wade reign of error, both sides (pro-life and pro-death) took the positions they did based on false impressions of what would follow the decision being overruled.
In Ireland, abortion was outlawed by a Constitutional Amendment passed by the voters in 1983. That amendment was repealed by the voters in 2018 in a landslide, and repeal was followed by raucous celebrations and street parties that lasted for a week.
The pro-death faction was wrong to fear reversal of Roe v. Wade, and the pro-life faction was foolish to hope for an end to abortion as a result.
In all Western European and European settler societies, abortion is wildly popular, and if subjected to the democratic process it will be legalized everywhere.
No, actually, you're making decisions about someone else's body.
Another victory for males wanting unprotected sex without responsibility.
Sadly, the fact that amendment was passed back in 1983 probably made people complacent about passing on *why* that amendment was passed and actually teaching people value life and just let "the law" on the books speak for them. The values were not passed on, and forgotten. And you got the 2018 result. 1983 - 2018 is not exactly a long period of time...but clearly enough for complete cultural rot to occur if the previous generations do not properly raise the next generations.
Yes that makes a lot of sense. It’s a very different Michigan than it was in 1931.
Well, even if there were universal support in the Republican party for the no-exception abortion bans, the Republican party only makes up 25% of the electorate.
Most people aren’t 100% either way, but they will pick the mom over the baby, push come to shove.
