Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said federal efforts to encourage replacing car lanes with bike lanes is “the height of stupidity,” as well as joining other GOP lawmakers in expressing skepticism over proposals to incentivize e-bike purchases.
“I’m not going to spend money on buying e-bikes for people like me who have bought them — they’re expensive,” Romney told Insider in an interview. “Removing automobile lanes to put in bike lanes is, in my opinion, the height of stupidity, it means more cars backing up, creating more emissions.”
Romney’s comment comes after Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) introduced the Sarah Debbink Langenkamp Active Transportation Safety Act last month, which would support state and local government efforts to build safer, more complete networks for bicycling and walking.
The legislation — named after a U.S. diplomat who died last August after being struck by a flatbed truck driver — will unlock Highway Safety Improvement Program funding for projects that connect two pieces of safe cycling infrastructure and allow other bicyclist and pedestrian safety projects to be fully federally funded.

Ebikes, defeats the whole purpose of riding a bicycle.
There will be no discussion of issues.
The Utah Atty General will primary him and he will retire in disgrace. There will be no debates. There will be no position statements. There will be no campaign.
He will retire. And the replacement will separate himself from the GOPe in DC or he’ll be removed, too.
Whatever Willard, you Rat.
Yeah, so great that several bayarea cities are tearing car lanes out to make bike lanes, making traffic even worse when it doesn’t need to be.
I’m starting to think you actually SUPPORT this bike-lane BS ...
Class D fire extinguishers aren’t cheap.
There will be no discussion of issues.
The only issue of significance is removal of Romney.
A broken clock is correct twice per day. But is there anything more important that Romney could be talking about?
Has he said anything about Trump?
With me, there will ALWAYS be discussion of issues. And it's increasingly clear that you DO support this demonicRAT bike-lane BS waste of money.
Be a man: Admit it. Or deny it. Obfuscation is for swamp-critters.
No, but I heard Trump sent Romney a case of Bud Light.
Another government mandate to come: smog arresters built into bicycle seats.
Statements like these are never made in a vacuum. You don't seriously think he called a press conference just to condemn this one piece of stupid legislation, and then disappeared. Please tell me you don't think that.
Quote from the article: " Romney told Insider in an interview. "
Interviews cover many topics, and the interviewee responds to questions posed to him. The matter may seem trivial to you ... but he was asked. To his credit, he gave a direct answer. That's rare. Even a weasel like Romney occasionally gets something right.
Actually, ebikes increases the reasons for people to ride bikes. I own an ebike, and I have to pedal to activate the motor-assist feature which can be as little as none to high-powered assist. No pedaling, no motion. There are basically two types, pedal-activation or push-button activation. The push-button types are slower in allowed mph, while the pedal-activation are allowed a higher mph. The ebike allows me to tackle steep uphill riding, and has a button to move the bike when I walk alongside it. Great for seniors like me.
As for bicycle lanes that take away car lanes, I'm against that and agree that it is out of control to reduce car lanes that aggravate movement of traffic. I had little problem as a boy riding bikes in city traffic, and see little need to take away car lanes in cities for sparse use of bicycles.
That’s the hill to die on, Mittens. Bike Lanes.....
The bar has been set very high but the stupid goes higher than that!
We should listen to this guy. He is an expert in stupidity.
Broken clock
Bikes are entitled to safe passage, just like cars.
Would you rather follow behind a bike, or allow them their own lane?
