~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Dugway Proving Ground, Utah
Dugway Proving Ground (DPG) is a U.S. Army facility established in 1942 to test biological and chemical weapons, located about 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, and 13 miles south of the 2,624 sq mile Utah Test and Training Range. It encompasses 801,505 acres of the Great Salt Lake Desert, an area the size of the state of Rhode Island, and is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges.

Dugway's mission is to test United States and Allied biological and chemical weapon defense systems in a secure and isolated environment. DPG also serves as a facility for US Army Reserve and US National Guard maneuver training, and US Air Force flight tests, mostly from nearby Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield. DPG is controlled by the United States Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC).
In addition to chem/bio defense testing and evaluation, Dugway supports training for military and first responders, testing and evaluation of obscurants, and the development, testing, and integration of unmanned aircraft systems.
Testing and Training in 2021:
163 Testing Events 85 Training Events 1300 Soldiers Trained Dugway has a highly skilled workforce of dedicated scientists, security technicians, food service professionals, and other supporting staff. Around 300-400 people live on post and call Dugway home year round.
Dugway Proving Ground was also home to the High Resolution Fly's Eye Cosmic Ray Detector, which discovered the first ultra-high-energy cosmic ray. Dugway is home to several radio telemetry and tracking radar (i.e. RIR-777, TPQ-39 (Ver. V) and MPQ-39) sites which track national flight assets during flight tests at UTTR. The High Resolution Fly's Eye or HiRes detector was an ultra-high-energy cosmic ray observatory that operated in the western Utah desert from May 1997 until April 2006. HiRes used the atmospheric fluorescence technique that was pioneered by the Utah group first in tests at the Volcano Ranch experiment and then with the original Fly's Eye experiment.

The first case of an individual surviving nerve gas occurred at Dugway in early nineteen fifties. A military involved in burning off nerve gas had a leak in his butyl rubber suit. He went down but his partner hit him with a shot of atropine and he lived. He was completely bald and hairless, and I believe remained so the rest of his life.

What a blast from the past!
My late husband served in the Army at Dugway, 1953-1954.
What stories he had to tell to his grandchildren!
One of his duties was to take all the dependents to a safe place 25 miles away whenever they were testing something particularly nasty.
He had to get all the kids rigged up in gas masks (which had Mickey Mouse ears) and drive them and their moms in a big bus, far away to a safe venue. Then bring them all home again after the all-clear.
We all loved the Dugway stories.

My husband served there fora year at that time.
He recalled one incident when all the sheep on the Indian reservation were killed, but all the horses survived. It was because the sheep were close to the ground, where the poison gasses settled, and the horses stood up to sleep, and were above the poison.
I don’t know if the sheep owners were ever reimbursed.
My husband survived it all, and lived to be 88, leaving 8 children, 17 grandchildren, and a couple dozen great-grands.

At Home in Jesus
Remain in me, as I also remain in you.
John 15:4Several years ago, we brought home an adult black cat named Juno from the local animal shelter. Truthfully, I only wanted help thinning our mice population, but the rest of the family wanted a pet. The shelter gave us rigorous instructions on how to establish a feeding routine that first week so Juno would learn our house was his home, the place he belonged and where he’d always have food and safety. This way, even if Juno might roam, he would always eventually come home.
If we don’t know our true home, we’re forever tempted to roam in vain search for goodness, love, and meaning. If we want to find our true life, however, Jesus said, “Abide in me” (John 15:4 esv). Biblical scholar Frederick Dale Bruner highlights how abide (like a similar word abode) evokes a sense of family and home. So Bruner translates Jesus’ words this way: “Stay at home in me.”
To drive this idea home, Jesus used the illustration of branches attached to a vine. Branches, if they want to live, must always stay at home, tenaciously fixed (abiding) where they belong.
There are many voices beckoning us with hollow promises to fix our problems or provide us some new “wisdom” or exhilarating future. But if we’re to truly live, we must remain in Jesus. We must stay at home. .
Reflect & Pray
What pulls you away from your home in Jesus? How has Jesus shown Himself to be your true source of life?
Jesus, I like to roam. I’m pulled in all kinds of directions. But I want to stay at home with You. You’re my life. Help me to abide in You.
Learn more about abiding in Christ.

Howdy, luvie.
I don’t envy you the heat that you had to endure today.
It was kinda chilly here. Just did make it to 60 and it was damp and a little breezy. They still say we’ll have mid 80s tomorrow but we’ll see how that goes.

Hey there, radu!
We’ll have mid-80s again tomorrow and then a bit cooler on Wednesday. I look forward to cooler...for as long as it’ll last. LOL! It’s actually pretty perfect out there now, and I’d go sit out except I haven’t had a chance to clean the bird poo off the patio furniture.
Your 60s sound great to me except for the breezy. Hope you enjoy the warm-up.

You need to get out there to clean off the patio furniture so you can sit outside when the nights are comfy. Do it the next comfy day or the time’s gonna slip by and it’ll be too hot.
Our 60 today wasn’t a comfortable 60. We had a little rain this morning so the air was damp, and the breeze shoved it right through clothing. Not a pleasant day.
It’s going to be windy the next three days and that’ll take the edge off the hot temps. Thursday will be back down to around 60 and with the strong winds, that’s really going to be unpleasant. It’s usually around 5 degrees cooler on the mountain and I’ll be up there at the museum Thursday to learn about the new items they put in over the winter.

I did clean off one chair, took a cushion out and sat with Peaches for a few minutes. It was lovely. But I can’t sit still for very long. LOL! So, I came back in.
It’s a shame your 60 was damp and chilly. A still day could have been perfect.

At least you were able to go out for a little bit.
It would have been fairly nice today, even with the breeze, if it hadn’t been damp. A little sunshine would have been nice too. I hoped for some sun tomorrow but right now, clouds are coming up from a huge mass in AL and that mass is stationary, other than expanding up this way. *sigh*
