Right now he would be running for the nomination. Wouldn’t that be a technicality? If he doesn’t win the nomination, he’s not really running for the Presidency. Or do I have that wrong?

Bob Dole did this right. He resigned to run. Also, he waited his turn.

Given what happened this afternoon, De Santis should announce he is not running and endorse Trump.

This has been in the news for a couple months. The law is vague. They're getting rid of the vagueness. It's the right thing to do.
Best ticket would be: Pompeo/DeSantis. Pompeo has International experience that DeSantis lacks.
And don't start with the CIA bit..he was appointed by Trump. Please look around at his writings and bio...impressive. Smart, a Patriot, and experienced!!

Seems like the timing for this maneuver isn’t bad at all.
Changing the rule after he announces a presidential run would be bad timing.
Meanwhile Heavy D sends a strong signal to the rest of the field about his intentions.

And if the desantis supporters here that have been spamming thread, after thread, had morals, they would denounce desantis for wanting to run for president, after he ran to be governor for 4 more years...but then, from the way many of them lie and attack Trump, they're all probably giddy that the left is going to help the deeps swamp take Trump out, so Jeb2.0 has a chance of being the republican presidential candidate.

Waste of time now.
Trump popularity elevated to level making everyone non players...

Quite a friendly legislature
Maybe Trump should have donated a bunch of money to the repubs when he was getting ready to run for president.

I thought the current law said this:
99.012 Restrictions on individuals qualifying for public office.
- (4)(a) Any officer who qualifies for federal public office must resign from the office he or she presently holds if the terms, or any part thereof, run concurrently with each other.
- (b) The resignation is irrevocable.
- (c) The resignation must be submitted at least 10 days before the first day of qualifying for the office he or she intends to seek.
- (d) The written resignation must be effective no later than the earlier of the following dates:
- 1. The date the officer would take office, if elected; or
- 2. The date the officer’s successor is required to take office.
Does this mean that the governor of Florida doesn't have to resign to run for another office; he only has to resign if he wins the other office?
What does it mean to "qualify for public office?" Does he have to be nominated or does he have to win?
A reading of the other sections in chapter 99 of Title IX of Florida law differentiates between "qualifying for the general election" and "qualifying for a primary election." By their consistent use of the words, a candidate isn't "qualified" for federal office until they are nominated, meaning until they won the primary election. That would suggest that DeSantis wouldn't have to submit a resignation just to run in the primaries; he would only have to submit a resignation if he wins the primary and runs in the general election.
If DeSantis loses the general election, this mean that he can still be governor until January 20, 2024 because even though the resignation is irrevocable, it doesn't take effect until the date he would have assumed office if he won.

Complete article for context. *****
Timing is everything, and the timing here is simultaneously transparent and inappropriate.
Today the Florida Senate scheduled a change via committee vote of the “Resign to Run”
law for next Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 2:00pm. The intent of the change is almost certainly
to permit Governor Ron DeSantis to formally announce his 2024 candidacy without having
to resign his job as governor.
Irony: Florida law change scheduled today, same date as Trump indictment announced.
Florida law change committee vote scheduled Tuesday 4/4/23, same date as Trump traveling
to Manhattan for his arraignment.

These are election laws. How are they bad timing? Lol. It’s literally perfect timing.
