TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The former principal for a Tallahassee charter school resigned after what she called a “series of miscommunications” regarding a 6th grade art class lesson that included an image of Michelanglo’s ‘David.’ The situation drew several complaints from parents, and has launched debate over the school’s policies.
Tallahassee Classical School confirmed to WCTV the art lesson took place last Friday, and several parents reached out to express concerns that same day.
Board Chair Barney Bishop confirmed that as part of an emergency meeting on Monday, a few days after the lesson, former principal Hope Carrasquilla was given an ultimatum to either resign or be terminated.

Mayme some parents think there’s a difference between college and 6th grade-level art lessons?
Maybe not Mayme... spelling (typing) is hard.
I guess. Just keep them out of Italy. Lol.
I’m sure there was more to this story.
They just used this as a reason...
Our country has gone completely insane.

My understanding was that this lesson was not the real issue
A sixth grader ought to be able to handle a Renaissance masterpiece that’s the common cultural heritage of the world. Something else must be going on.
If you know of any hidden issues, please let us know. Thanks.
Considering that this school teaches anatomy in the 5th grade, I doubt viewing the David in the 6th grade was any kind of shock. It is a beautiful historic sculpture and a masterpiece. To object to it in school is the height of ignorance. This gives liberals a huge example of the mouth breathing right wing red neck stereotype.
It is one of the most famous statues in the world. Good grief! Even the news clip has David’s private parts blurred out for SIXTH graders, but drag queen story hour is still okay for pre-schoolers?
This is absurd. I’ve tried twice to explain why I think this is absurd but I find these parents so disgusting that I can’t express myself with the detachment I should, so I just delete my comments. I give up so I’ll just repeat myself. This is absurd and the parents are disgusting.
There’s plenty of masterpieces and lesser works more appropriate for elementary students. If parents want more than that, they can deal with that themselves.
My thought exactly. Teacher probably intensely focused on the genital area, or tied it into trans somehow, or some such crap.
Article mentions that letters asking for parental permission for viewing the piece, which were sent the prior year, weren’t sent this year, but then states that that was not the reason for the firing. Something else going on there, then.
I taught David as part of 9th grade World History Renaissance unit. It’s not necessary in order to learn the salient points about humanism, but it helps. I’m not sure, though, that 6th graders need that lesson.
I agree. I’ve seen conflicting reports about why the teacher was really fired, but parents complaining about a kid seeing the statue of David are retarded. And yes, i’m throwing out the retard word. And I don’t care if the kid is 3, 8, or 16. Its a statue. The kids can handle it. Its not porn. Relax
the ‘David’ ztatue has been around for how many years?
How many times has it shown on PBS?
i wonder how many would get worked up over ‘The Pieta’?
IMHO, you shouldn’t be in “art class” if Michelangelo’s “David” scares the piss out of you. This is some really dumb sh*t.
