Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is recalibrating his strategy and messaging amid signs that his presidential ambitions may be faltering before his campaign even gets off the ground.
DeSantis began the year with clear momentum in the nascent GOP presidential primary, topping former President Trump in head-to-head polling and drawing unparalleled interest from Republican voters and operatives eager to see a fresh face at the helm of the party.
But there are signs that his momentum may be stalling: he’s faced weeks of relentless attacks from Trump and his allies, fellow Republicans have criticized him for dubbing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “a territorial dispute” and some recent polls have shown his support in a hypothetical GOP primary slipping.
“I think for all the fanfare about DeSantis, there’s still a lot of stuff he needs to work on,” said one Republican strategist, who plans to back the Florida governor in the 2024 primary if he runs. “That’s normal when you’re exploring this kind of thing. But I think he needs to rethink things a little bit.”
To some degree, that already appears to be happening.

Thank you.
Such a clever insult. Hope it made you feel good about yourself, because nobody here thinks you're winning any points in the discussion with your "artful" insults.
You are degrading yourself and no one else.
There it is again..."Vote for who I prefer or we're doomed". Gak~
You people were doomed before Trump ever came down the escalator as you obviously didn't know prior to Trump the Republicans and Democrats are all riding in the same limo.
Pay attention stupid.
Step 1: Don’t listen to The Hill or any other far-left outlets.
Step 2: See Tagline.
Enjoy the decline of the the country then. Letting the democrats run the executive branch is utter suicide.
Trump was masterful at identifying the problem but not so good at fixing anything. Desantis has top to bottom built a 100% loyal and effective administration in Florida and rooted out the rot in elections, education, healthcare and government. He’s run circles around the left and the old guard. Anyone pretending otherwise is a damn fool. Unfortunately we have a lot to them here.
Not voting for either guy in November is extremely low IQ.
You'r right, he wasn't that far behind a few months ago. With each month, Trump has widened the gap. He's now over 30 points ahead, and this before last week.
LS has posted the polls, I've seen them. It's getting worse for Ron D.
Sorry. I like Ron D. He's been a great governor.
He may not be ready nationally. Correction, he's probably not ready.
congratulations...
we’re winning in florida while you’re making yourselves look like idiots...
trump is a bigger meatball...
Sod off Swampy, go play with yourself some more. I'm done. I won't respond, so go ahead, give me some of your artful and meaningful insults again.
I won't read them, and no one else will care because instead of winning points by persuasion you look like a 12 year old spewing what you think is smart.
Have a nice evening.
Trump will destroy the Gop for decades especially ironic since Trump was a Bill Clinton democrat until 2010 which was just 13 years ago . In fact , Trump campaigned hard for Bill Clinton twice , I am not shocked Trump does not care about the Gop.
I think DeSantis wants to run, but will ultimately decide against a 2024 run
Oh You mean immature like Trump non stop ugly name calling trashing of fellow Gop politician ?
How dare you,you Globalist! Just kidding.
you too karen...
I think you’re right. It would be a better value for his supporters’ money. And in 2028 he’d be more likely to be top dog instead of being in someone else’s shadow.
Let’s get back to the subject of this article.
It seems the GOPe and never Trumpers are getting the vibe that DeSantis is fading, and fast. They’re looking down the bench for a savior.
Since Mittens and McMuffin are demonstrable losers, why not look to Florida? The Sunshine State has a rich history of successful Republican governors who may just be willing to jump in for the rescue.
How about Crist or Jeb!?
It appears that the short-lived DeSantis Meatball uprising on FR has been put down. You are like that Japanese soldier found on an island 20 years after the war and still fighting.
It's over, Johnny. Come in from the cold.
