Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, when asked about rumours of former President Donald Trump's impending indictment, denounced the man in charge of the investigation, New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
What the man who might be Mr Trump's most formidable presidential rival said next, however, was telling.
"I don't know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair," he said. "I just I can't speak to that."
He went on to mention "porn star hush money payments" a second time, before pivoting back to criticism of what he called a "high-profile politicised prosecution" by a prosecutor he said was backed by deep-pocketed liberal donor George Soros.
The Florida governor seemed to go out of way to emphasise the tawdry origins of the potential crimes being investigated, even while denouncing the investigation itself.
That could be a sign of how Mr Trump's presidential rivals handle a possible arrest and criminal trial for falsifying business records and state campaign finance law violations.
Mr DeSantis had been under pressure from Trump supporters to defend the former president and denounce the prosecution ever since the Mr Trump speculated on his social media website that he would be arrested on Tuesday.

DeSantis needs to stick with being FL governor.
While you are at it, here’s another allegation from Trump about DeSantis and underage girls.
Plenty of folks here in FR were saying this was stupid when it happened. When you do this type of thing to one of your main rivals then get mad when you are in trouble and don’t get a response you like, turn around is fair play.
Sod Off Swampy.
The entire GOP was against Trump from the 2016 campaign onwards.
And the rank-and-file GOP is always told to bend over and take it to support RINO candidates for “unity” but the favor is NEVER returned.
What about the dozens of House members that used taxpayer money to payoff victims that filed sexual harassment claims against them?
"I have no interest in getting involved in some type of manufactured circus by some Soros DA," DeSantis said.BREAKING: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Finally Reacts to Donald Trump's Potential Arrest [03/20/2023]
The principal issue I have with DeSantis is the people still with poor living conditions after Ian. He was stellar at first. Biden et al is depriving them of funds to help. Especially vets and elderly.
He should also be loyal to Trump.
Why are you playing tradition intra-party politics?
————————————————————————
Hoo Boy. Intra-party politics is exactly what Trump has been playing for days now. He’s been using the threat of an arrest on Tuesday as a political gimmick and worse yet, he has been blasting Ron DeSantis for refusing to jump on his bandwagon.
“This truly is unprecedented.”
You must be joking. This threat of arrest is truly a joke. It pales in comparison to what Trump has faced in the past.
May I remind you of things that were truly unprecedented? Things like COVID-19 being used as a weapon against Trump, or a years long congressional investigation against Trump based on lies by the FBI, not one but two impeachment proceedings against trump, one of which was when he was already out of the White House, and so many more outrageous and illegal unconstitutional incidents. Too numerous to mention.
And DeSantis partied with high school girls that were his students.
We partied with our teachers in high school. No big deal.
why should desantis be loyal to trump after trump started his “operation warped speech” against desantis?...
desantis doesn’t owe trump anything...
if you’re so concerned about the living conditions of hurricane ian survivors you should get up off your butt and get your hands dirty in florida instead of preaching from a keyboard...
That's where the magnanimity comes in. In the conflict you look like "the better man". DeSantis should have done that if for no other reason to make himself look better. Again, foolish of him not to see that. Now people like me that like both candidates like DeSantis a little less.
desantis is winning while trump is whining...
And it may be.
Which will be proven in court.
Or, as I fear, it will be a kangaroo court and evidence won’t matter.
Aver your eyes if it suits you.
Proven in court. Wow. What rock have you been living under
Trump says it’s a false accusation. He doesn’t lie.

I’m really a bit amazed by how many “conservatives” actually don’t know the real (aka non-media) story about that entire case of Stormy D.
She alleged there was an affair during the 2016 campaign, which she later admitted was a lie under oath during the defamation lawsuit while rep’d by jailbird Avenatti. She lost the lawsuit and owes DJT $300K for legal fees.
Michael Cohen, one of Trumps attorneys, pled guilty to several counts of tax fraud, and agreed to pled guilty to alleged crimes of campaign finance and lying to Congress (Mueller) in an effort to get leniency in his sentencing.
It was all a LIE.
So Today, when RDS snarks about “not knowing anything about paying a Porn Star”...it doesn’t matter that he used the word “alleged”.
He fed the media their own lies, for their own use against his opponent.
Oh, and spare me the “he hasn’t announced yet, BS”
How many divorces has Trump had?
How many did Reagan have?
While I agree with almost all you said, I was not ventilating about the “THREAT to arrest...”
I never even said that. Your word “threat”, not mine.
Now an actual arrest of an ex-President by a DA of the far extreme of that president’s rival political party over non-existent charges would be “unprecedented.”
You really have no beef with me unless you want one.
If you want to believe that Bragg had/has no such interest and it was all hatched in Trump’s mind, knock yourself out.
I am beginning to think that the people funding and controlling the DeSantis for President in 2024 campaign are not so much trying to stop Trump as they are trying (and succeeding) to destroy the DeSantis for President in 2028 campaign.
