A Four-Decade Secret: One Man’s Story of Sabotaging Carter’s Re-election
The New York Times ^ | Peter Baker

WASHINGTON — It has been more than four decades, but Ben Barnes said he remembers it vividly. His longtime political mentor invited him on a mission to the Middle East. What Mr. Barnes said he did not realize until later was the real purpose of the mission: to sabotage the re-election campaign of the president of the United States.

It must have been the most effective political trick of all time because scary Reagan won 44 states against the incumbent president.

Forty-four states says a lot.

BS. Ben Barnes is every bit the cheater and liar that Lyndon Johnson was. My father co-owned an airplane with him, and said he was the slimiest lowlife he had ever met. Barnes wanted to do business deals with him, but my dad refused to get involved in anything else with him. Never trusted him.

Instead of giving one arm of the military the assignment to rescue the hostages, he gave in and allowed each branch to participate.

That list would be fun to read today.

I graduated high school in 1979.

I had the endless joy of endlessly looking for a decent job in the Carter economy.

Fortunately, the Reagan economy followed and my life improved.

Now that I am retired, the Biden economy threatens to crush my plans for a comfortable retirement.

midway through the article Baker admits that there is no proof Reagan knew about this and the entire premise of the article collapses

but the headline and opening are all excellent psychodrama for a radical left that has never actually lost a Presidential election and has always had it stole by the Right.

I saw on a separate Twitter that the “historian” Michael Beschloss is whining about how John Connally supposedly orchestrated this and the fact he was just such an awful man is illustrated by some photo of him holding a rifle in Nixon’s Oval Office, which was “insensitive” bc JFK was killed in Dallas. Unlike Beschloss, Connally served in the military, in the Pacific in WW2, and he was himself shot in the JFK assassination. Unlike Beschloss, a whiny crier, Connally was a man.

I remember that mission. I also remember reading about the Mullahs urinating on the bodies of our troops that died during that tragedy.

I’m ashamed to admit that I voted for Anderson back then. He was my congressman and I didn’t know politics from a steaming pile of dog crap.
And don’t get me going on Kinzinger…..

It was the helicopter pilots, the Army never got started because they were never delivered.

Exactly so…

And…. The institutional insanity established under that evil revolutionary persist to this day. His ineptness drove the economy down so far so fast that it took Reagan 5 or so years to right things.

The stuff that I professionally had to deal with were things coming out via the EPA, Department of Interior and Department of Energy. On the personal front, he created crushing inflation + stagnation in wages, crashed home values, skyrocketed interest rates, fuel embargoes, high unemployment. It sucked. I get ticked off just at the mention of that aw’ shucks peanut farmer. What a fake.

His brother Billy Carter was pretty entertaining though. I wish I had bought a case of Billy Beer.

Yes, because as everyone knows, the Carter administration was cruising for an easy re-election. His plan would have worked if it weren’t for those meddling kids!

Yeah, no. Easily one of the worst presidents ever. Nobody cares, good riddance.
