The "NATO membership train is moving" - as one Friday headline out of Europe states enthusiastically, after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced Turkey will ratify Finland’s NATO membership application prior to the Turkish elections in May.
Erdogan said in a Friday press briefing while standing alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinisto the he's asked Turkey's parliament to approve ratification. However, it also became clear that Sweden's bid will not be approved.

"We have decided to initiate the ratification process in our parliament", Turkish President Erdogan said after meeting his Finnish counterpart Niinisto in Ankara. "We have decided to start the protocol of Finland's accession to NATO in our parliament," Erdogan said following a meeting with his Finnish counterpart.
Concerning Sweden, Erdogan commented that his country submitted a list of 120 "terrorists" to Stockholm, but complained that not a single one of them has been extradited.
Sweden's membership bid is expected to continue to stall, after deteriorating relations with Turkey in the wake of the Quran-burning incident by a far-right activist. Turkey has also demanded Swedish authorities crackdown on Kurdish political groups and operatives while alleging that Stockholm has hosted "terrorists" on its soil.
Finland is at the same time building a 200km fence along its border with Russia to boost security, also after reporting that Russian men fled into Sweden by the droves in order to escape conscription. The fence will reportedly be 10 feet high and topped with barbed wire.
Erdogan: “Send me the bikini team and I might change my mind.”
Russia Falls, Turkey Rises.
If history has taught us anything, is that one baddie always replaces another.
And what’s Russia going to do about it? LOL.
good, Finland is the one we were worried about, since it’s right on Russia’s border it faces a lot more risk than Sweden does
so, Russia’s invasion to “stop NATO’s expansion to its borders” has resulted in another NATO country on Russia’s border
brilliant planning there, Putin
Liberate Constantinople?
I believe Turkey has a pretty robust military.
Not sure that would work out well for Russia,
particularly at this time.
Turkey cannot rebuild the Ottoman Empire until Russia is out of the way.
And who do you think all of those Muslims in Europe now will support this time around?
Turkey is going to end up being a much bigger problem than Russia.
Plus it would be easy for Finland to take back St. Petersburg from Russia because it’s right there.
You mean Vyborg. I don't think the Finns ever had St. Petersburg.
I don’t think anyone but China and Ukraine will be taking anything back from Russia.
RE: I believe Turkey has a pretty robust military.
And Turkey will not be alone. Being a member of NATO, an invasion of Turkey would mean war with most of Europe *AND* the USA.
Just great. Fight and die for the damn Turks. Brilliant!
RE: Plus it would be easy for Finland to take back St. Petersburg from Russia because it’s right there.
Let’s be realistic, NO COUNTRY IN EUROPE is even remotely interested in taking ANY Russian territory, much less invading or occupying Russia.
RE: Just great. Fight and die for the damn Turks. Brilliant!
That’s what we all get for joining and being the de facto leader of NATO.
The only other solution is to disbandNATO altogether.
Just like we fought for Stalin in WWII only to then have Stalin turn against us.
Just as the Turks will eventually do.
So, what’s the alternative?
As I said, to withdraw from NATO and leave the rest of Europe to fend for themselves.
Just kick Turkey out.
I am not pleased that Europe has allowed so many Muslims
to drift into their nations. As you allude to, it may
turn out to be a big problem. It is strange though,
some of the things we see as problematic, have a funny
way of turning out not to become the problem it was
rational to think they could be.
I look at China. I’m not pleased with what it is doing
globally. The strange thing is, China is in deep do do,
when it comes to it’s aging populace, and declining
birth rates. It is thought that China’s populace
may drop by up to 700,000 people in the next 50 years.
I don’t think it is financially sound, and I do admit
it’s kind of hard to say that looking at what seems to
be our situation.
Muslims in Europe may see things fundamentally different
as they become acclimated there, getting decent jobs,
living in a higher level of Western society. Now that
may be a hard sell, but look at the people we have here.
Most don’t favor the old country where they came from.
They become members of our society.
Granted the Islamic followers can be problematic. It’s
pretty clear there will be some rogues for a long time.
It may not turn out to be the dire threat we thought
it would be. We’ll see.
I think what you touch on is logical. Sometimes our
logic doesn’t take everything into account. Sometimes
it just doesn’t provide the accurate future we expect.
I will have to say, I do see downside from the Islamic.
I hope it will be less of a downside than I had thought
it would be.
There is some basis for thinking it could be. If they
all were the problem we thought they would be, there
would be fifty terrorist attacks per day right now.
We do have some strange folks act out. In general
these people are not acting out.
That could change. We’ll see.
