Gov. DeSantis calls COVID a 'woke virus,' praises Florida for avoiding 'Faucian dystopia'

Gov. Ron DeSantis praised Florida's actions three years into COVID for helping to avoid what he called a "Faucian dystopia," while harshly criticizing the federal response and claiming it led to an uncertain economic climate.

"We are here looking at this three years out and it's important to say the experts that designed these policies and that were hampering everybody — they were wrong about almost everything," DeSantis said Thursday during a choreographed event at The Fire restaurant in Winter Haven in advance of a widely-expected Republican presidential bid.

"Florida, we played an important role over the last three years. I think we were one of the first states to see the experts were getting it wrong and we resolved to charge a different course. We are not going to let this state descend into a Faucian dystopia, not on our watch," DeSantis said, referring to Dr. Anthony Fauci, an immunologist who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022 and helped lead the federal response to COVID-19 under Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

At Thursday's event, DeSantis criticized Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for pushing 15 days to slow the spread, claiming that was never what federal officials meant. He blamed prolonged business and school shutdowns and mask mandates for a range of economic issues, including a high rate of national inflation, as well as supply chain and workforce shortages.

The Faucian bargain is no better than the Faustian bargain.

DeSantis is the man when it comes to covid. But i’m still on the Trump train. Wish these 2 would work together, because then they’d be unstoppable.

I like DeSantis but Gov Kemp opened Georgia before Florida opened. Course the Kemp haters forget that fact.

One has to wonder how DeSantis would have acted/reacted to the virus if he had been president instead of Trump. I have no doubt that DeSantis would have acted the same as Trump, because, it was termed a crisis and pandemic and just about everybody were listening to the 'experts' including Fauci.

It's good that DeSantis did not go along with the lockdowns and school closures, but,a lot of his actions and reactions came after the world knew a little bit more about the virus and the actions that needed to be taken; iow, a bit of hindsight on his part.

I'm still with Trump, but DeSantis a close second. Everybody else in the field of candidates, should think about dropping out now, since they don't stand a chance. To me, Trump is the incumbent president and any challengers should rethink their decisions.

DeSantis rocks!!

Although that article is full of mistruths. Like the mainstream medical beliefs, masks work....only the political mainstream medical belief.

Or that boosters eventually weaken the immune system. This is true and was most recently published in the Lancet a week ago.

Protection against omicron infection waned after the COVID-19 booster, and eventually suggested a possibility for negative immune imprinting (Exposure reduced immune responses to variants further down the line) according to data on 2,228,686 people who had received at least two vaccine dose (Lancet Inf Dis. 2023;Published:March 10). “”A third mRNA booster dose was associated with 26·2% reduction in incidence of infection and 75·1% reduction in incidence of severe COVID-19 over a year of follow-up. However, protection against infection waned gradually by month after the booster and was negligible by the sixth month. In the seventh month and thereafter, incidence of infection was higher among people who had the booster compared to those with only the primary series, suggesting a possibility for differential immune imprinting compromising protection in people who had the booster vaccination against the newer omicron sublineages.””

Kemp also signed a bill allowing people with learners to automatically get their drivers license because covid.
Guess how well that worked out? had to tack on 6 months after the fact, to force these guys get tested.

Kemp’s an idiot, complete and total idiot, but a broken clock is right twice a day.

This is totally false. The only governor who didn’t impose any lockdown orders was Kristi Noem of South Dakota.

I’d have far more respect for DeSantis if he just owned up to his decisions instead of whitewashing his record and pretending he wasn’t a lockdown Nazi.

In a fratricidal campaign, I can see RdS calling out Trump for being played for such a patsy on Covid. Trump has yet to denounce that warp speed vaxx poison. On this issue, RdS definitely has the high ground regardless of how many ventilators were built.

"RdS definitely has the high ground...."

Time is on Ron's side.

Ron is to Don as Don was to Bush.

Don destroyed the Bush dynasty partly by asserting that good intentions and bad advice from experts are not excuses: ...you were the president. The huge failure regarding the deadly WMD mission belongs to the man in charge.

Trump fans' similarly weak defense of him confirm he is Bush III.

Ron could take the Trump approach to destroy a once-trusted president. Huge failure is huge failure. And the buck stops at the top.

Plus, if Ron goes all Trumpy about it, he can point out Bush III was WORSE than Bush II. Trump actually created WMD and then dropped it on America and the world. Twice actually. The bug was created on Don's watch, with your money.

Trump absolutely would play it this way if a Ron admin created the bug and SwampJab.

It's too late already for my vote, but an apology would be nice.

You are so correct. Both are excellent natural leaders. Doubt if one could work under the other.

This is totally false.

Well, I live in Tampa, and DeSantis only went along with the lockdowns when the virus and pandemic were fairly new, but when the virus was a bit better understood and face masks were proved to be ineffective, then is when he prevented the lockdowns and schools and business closure.

When it comes to Noem, well, she didn't have the huge population worries that Florida and other big states have or had. It was easier for her to avoid the lockdowns and hysteria that came from the pandemic. I don't consider ``DeSantis to be Nazi-like at all, but, he's still second on my list of presidential candidates, behind Trump.
