The Florida governor, who joined Donald Trump in declaring that defending Ukraine from Russia was not a vital interest, drew swift condemnations from establishment Republicans.
Declaring this week that defending Ukraine against Russia’s invasion was not a vital interest for the United States, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida cemented a Republican shift away from hawkish foreign policy that has played out over the past decade and accelerated with Donald J. Trump’s political rise.
Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis — whose combined support makes up more than 75 percent of Republican primary voters in the nascent 2024 presidential contest — are now largely aligned on Ukraine, signaling a sharp break from the interventionist approach that drove former President George W. Bush’s invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Another reason DeSantis is the real deal.
Or maybe they're Americans concerned about the serious pronlems at home....
GOP hawks can go to H E double sticks
I know, right? Disagree with America’s policy of propping up another failed state at the expense of our own and you’re automatically Boris or Natasha. It’s “Slavi Ukraini!” 24/7 to a small band of dedicated Zeepers. SMDH.
We know Bill Kristol is hard at work looking for someone else.
He’s got the time.
From the article:
“Declaring this week that defending Ukraine against Russia’s invasion was not a vital interest for the United States”
EXACTLY. How the truth cuts deep.
I don’t like the idea that those who support Ukraine are “hawks”, and are put into a false dichotomy about the fight.
From my point of view, the #1 threat to the US right now is China. But Russia retains its #2 position by dint of its willingness to be aggressive, repeated incursions into the territory of its neighbors, and a desire to rebuild in some form the Soviet Union.
So for this reason, the Russia-Ukraine war is a good thing, as it is taking Russia down several pegs. That Putin is a secret policeman, and to a great extent has put his secret police into the planning and leadership of the war is a good thing, as they are incompetent as military leaders.
I am not shocked that Ukraine is corrupt, or that the US is pouring money down its rat hole. We always do that, and we have supported many allies worse than the Ukrainians.
Were India to replace Ukraine and fight China, I would be just as enthusiastic that they should be supported. It would not mean that I would be especially pro-India.
No way DeSantis’ admin is not heavily influenced by those thugs. If he were to win it would because of all the deep stater. Trump is the only choice, period.
So now maybe I can vote for 2, Trump & DeSantis, but the latter only “came out” on this yesterday, which causes me suspicion.
it’s nice to know you use the new york times as a reputable news source...
“ It’s nice to know the GOP Ukraine ‘hawks’ are almost 100% guaranteed to lose next year’s presidential primary, as Trump or DeSantis being the nominee is basically a given at this point.”

Correctamundo. There will be a whole slew of “hawks” (aka neocons) splitting the 20% of the Republican primary voters who are eager to MAKE UKRAINE FIRST.
Feel free to produce a source with the “correct” information anytime instead of just whining.
Isn’t it strange that just as soon as we were free of Afghanistan, that the Deep State Military/Media/Industrial complex found a way to entangle us in ANOTHER perpetual war? One war after another for “democracy”

I gotta pay our bills, he said.
Another reason to like DeSantis.
Just because someone doesn’t support this war in Ukraine doesn’t make them a “Putin Puffer”.
I don’t support this war and I despise Putin too.
We need to understand a complete foreign policy, of which war is a last resort.
Putin invaded Ukraine under both Obama and Biden. But not under Trump. Why? Trump used the old Republican slogan “Speak Softly. And carry a Big Stick.” Democrats loved to attack Trump because he was soft-spoken to Putin.
But Trump pushed domestic production of fossil fuel, not just for the US, but for export to W Europe and Asia. This drove down the price of oil. Trump was obviously ready to allow as much cheap oil as the free market wanted to go to Europe. Trump made a deal with the Saudis and almost all Sunni nations that pump oil to follow the US lead.
That was more anti-Putin than anything Obama or Biden do. Putin needs high price of oil to finance his war. Putin needs W Europe dependent on his oil. Putin is evil. But he is not stupid. Trump made it impossible for Putin to wage war. Trump stopped a war during his term without war.
Screw the GOP hawks.
IMHO, we should stop funding corrupt Ukraine immediately and continue the stoppage until all the other countries, added together, can match what the US has provided so far.
