Emissions of the greenhouse gas commonly known as laughing gas are soaring. Can we cut emissions from its greatest anthropogenic source? I In the world's effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the source of our food is coming into the spotlight. There's good reason for that: Agriculture accounts for 16 to 27% of human-caused climate-warming emissions. But much of these emissions are not from carbon dioxide, that familiar climate change villain. They're from another gas altogether: nitrous oxide (N2O).
Also known as laughing gas, N2O does not get nearly the attention it deserves, says David Kanter, a nutrient pollution researcher at New York University and vice-chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative, an organisation focused on nitrogen pollution research and policy making. "It's a forgotten greenhouse gas," he says.
Yet molecule for molecule, N2O is about 300 times as potent as carbon dioxide at heating the atmosphere. And like CO2, it is long-lived, spending an average of 114 years in the sky before disintegrating. It also depletes the ozone layer. In all, the climate impact of laughing gas is no joke. Scientists at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have estimated that nitrous oxide comprises roughly 6% of greenhouse gas emissions, and about three-quarters of those N2O emissions come from agriculture.
But despite its important contribution to climate change, N2O emissions have largely been ignored in climate policies. And the gas continues to accumulate. A 2020 review of nitrous oxide sources and sinks found that emissions rose 30% in the last four decades and are exceeding all but the highest potential emissions scenarios described by the IPCC. Agricultural soil – especially because of the globe's heavy use of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser – is the principal culprit.

Water vapors is the most greenhouse gas of all of them, with heat capacity 10 times higher than carbon dioxide. And no one can do zilch about amount of water on planet Earth.
Certain humans, anyway.
While we’re at it, lets get rid of that other greenhouse gas - water vapor.
Stop LibTaints from breathing... all of our problems will disappear.
Clean up the Ganges and Yellow rivers and the problem is solved.
Guess we must end food then.
The atmosphere contains 0.04% CO2.
Man is responsible for 3.4% of that 0.04%
The total amount of anthropogenic CO2 In the atmosphere is therefore 0.0014%
Completely eliminate man's contribution and the Earth's atmosphere still contains 0.04% CO2.
From Wikipedia:
“Nitrous oxide’s atmospheric concentration reached 333 parts per billion (ppb) in 2020, increasing at a rate of about 1 ppb annually.”
That works out to the greenhouse equivalent of 100 ppm of CO2, if you accept the alarmists’ figures, and increasing at the rate of 1 ppm CO2 equivalent every three years and four months. Apparently this is so dangerous as to justify starving billions of people.
Hopefully the sarcasm tag isn't needed.
Over their heads like a balloon
Kinda impossible because most CO2 comes from plankton release and China releases 2 times the US emissions of CO2 (with no chance of decreasing).
US CO2 emissions have been going down for a decade.
Respectfully, acid rain was indeed a real issue. It was very plausibly traceable to the burning of coal in power plants and the burning of minerals in smelting operations. Those industries dumped tremendous amounts of sulfur dioxide into the air and it was easy to see how that would turn into sulfuric or sulfurous acid by having rain run through either of those compounds. In the interim, fairly stringent regulations have been imposed that forced the scrubbing of sulfur compounds from smokestack emissions. And the recovered sulfur or sulfur dioxide has commercial value. So the situation has more or less gone away.
Certainly, the parallels between the anti sulfur movement and the anti-carbon dioxide movement are pretty obvious.
By far, the biggest greenhouse gas these idiots are ignoring is H2O.
And the biggest greenhouse gas culprit, the most abundance in the atmosphere, has the others beat out by far.
It’s time to regulate that toxic, life threatening dihydrogen monoxide.
Maybe putting a giant tarp on the oceans will help stop it from leaking into the atmosphere.
👍👌
Just Whippit!
By gosh we just need to quit eating!
Not funny. That really is what they want.
Never forget that the whole "CO2 global warming" meme is a false crisis, invented out of thin air by the neo-malthusian Club of Rome as a tool to force a drastic die-off of human populations by suppressing Western European culture and technology.
Global warming CO2 has failed.
Climate change has failed.
"Renewable energy" is failing.
Eating bugs is a non-starter.
Now it's eliminating nitrate fertilizers.
and if we won't cooperate they'll starve us at gunpoint.
Whippit good.
