Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) called for gender-neutral bathrooms in schools on Thursday, in response to a town hall question from a transgender Virginia teenager.
“Look at me. I am a transgender man,” Niko, a 17-year-old from Arlington, Va., said at a CNN town hall. “Do you really think that the girls in my high school would feel comfortable sharing a restroom with me?”
Youngkin, who issued a series of restrictive guidelines to Virginia schools last fall related to transgender students, said on Thursday that it was important to accommodate students.
“That’s why I have said many, many times, we just need extra bathrooms in schools,” he said. “We need gender-neutral bathrooms and so people can use the bathroom that they, in fact, are comfortable with.”
Youngkin’s guidelines would require transgender students to participate in activities and use school facilities that align with the sex they were assigned at birth. It would also make it more difficult for students to change their name or gender presentation at school.
However, the suggestion that transgender students can use gender-neutral bathrooms in response to such restrictions faces legal challenges elsewhere in the country.
Several transgender students in Oklahoma are suing the state over such a policy, which required them to use “a single-occupancy restroom or changing room” if they declined to use facilities matching their sex assigned at birth under a new law.
Youngkin generally doubled down on several of his controversial education policies at the town hall, including barring transgender athletes from participating in sports that match their gender identity and forbidding the instruction of “inherently divisive concepts, including critical race theory,” which is an academic framework that examines the influence of racism on institutions.
I would have asked if ‘Niko’ possessed a penis, or not. No penis, no problem.
(I don’t have a problem with ‘neutral’ bathrooms, as long as there are also ‘Men’s and Women’s. I’ve used the neutral ones when they were convenient - when you gotta go, you gotta go.)

A gender neutral bathroom certainly makes more sense than allowing a transgender person to use a bathroom not based on their biological sex. It also is a safety issue. You can’t have students getting beaten up because their appearance does not match the sign on the bathroom door.
I propose XX bathrooms, XY Bathrooms and a third for those that are not sure. The campus police are to be forbidden from going into the third bathroom as they respect their unusual inclinations but only out of respect would they not interfer in sexual assault. /S
Wow! If Youngkin can’t stand up to defend young women, how will he stand against the left on other issues? To immediately fold when questioned, instead of responding that women have the right to privacy, he split the baby by calling for gender-neutral bathrooms. Youngkin decided that a mentally ill young man had more rights than women do when it comes to their privacy in a restroom.
A single use, gender neutral bathroom solves those problems.

I agree. Let’s just let the transgender community have their way on this issue. I’m sure they will be much like the other alphabet people and be totally satisfied that they have turned women into “others” and we will hear no more from them with additional requirements. Now! Aren’t we glad that issue is settled. I’m sure the trans community will finally be happy to be off the front pages of every news site since they have no more to demand of us.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough that he is NOT being squishy. The headline is misleading, and transgenders don’t want what he is offering.

Just so we understand each other, I think the radical gay, etc movement is one of the biggest problems facing our country. They are fanatical marxists and pretty much running the Democrat party.
I just think what Youngkin said is not catering to them.
He’s basically right. Put a toilet in a little room and put a lock on the damn door. First come first served, regardless of plumbing, problem solved.
Most of the floor space in multi-hole toilets is wasted anyway, so stop building them!
