WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday proposed strengthening a rule aimed at reducing polluted wastewater from coal-burning power plants that has contaminated streams, lakes and underground aquifers across the nation.
The Biden administration’s proposal for stricter standards at coal-burning plants also encourages the plants to retire or switch to other fuels such as natural gas by 2028.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the plan would particularly benefit low-income communities that have been disproportionately affected by pollution from coal-fired power plants.
The plan would address three types of wastewater generated at coal-fired power plants: from scrubbers that remove pollutants from exhaust systems; water used to flush out boilers at the bottom of a plant; and coal ash ponds that often leach into nearby waterways, EPA said.
Sierra Club attorney Joshua Smith said the changes were “a big step in the right direction” for forcing hundreds of coal-fired power plants across the country to take responsibility for the pollution that surrounding communities have long borne.
He added that the technologies used to eliminate the discharges highlighted by Biden administration officials have come a long way since a 2015 Obama-era rule that was rolled back under former President Donald Trump.
Radhika Fox, assistant EPA administrator for water, said the rule would have almost no impact on electricity costs for households. “We estimate a 63 cents per year increase for a typical household,” Fox said.

But...but...but it’s “Plant-Based” pollution!
Congress defunds EPA
you hear me McCarthy?
“Proposes”
Sure. Proposes
Next, it will be natural gas electric generation stations.
But eagles and other birds are killed by windmills on land and whales by offshore windmills.
It will destroy jobs and raise the cost of electricity. Those coal miners in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio vote conservative and thus it is all clear.
They can’t find another way to get rid of the water then pouring it into lakes and streams? I find that hard to believe.
Not next, now. Already the newest and cleanest natural gas electric generating stations in our county is being targeted.
Strange. Fish seem to do well in our local power plant cooling lake. They grow huge due to the warm water in winter. Eagles, deer, all do well here. I never saw deer or eagles in my youth in this area. Now they are all over the place.
Quite a few years back some farmer over in Oklahoma was complaining about lake water causing his chickens to lay colored eggs.
After raising cane about it, the problem was found to be an additive in the chicken feed.
BUT THE PLANT GOT THE BLAME!
The EPA has no common sense
We have the same thing here. One of the better bass fishing lakes in the area is a lake built to cool a power plant.
The Peoples Republic of New Mexico...
What the EPA is doing is continually "tweaking" the rules until they have broken all economic viability of coal based energy production.
This has nothing to do with pollution. It has everything to do with their globull warming religion. It has everything to do with hamstringing coal production.
Another nail in Joe Manchin’s coffin. Union leaders in W.VA may still endorse Manchin, but no way the rank and file are going to vote for Manchin.
True that. And besides that, natural gas in general is being targeted by Brandon's EO's making drilling harder to do and more costly.
Basically, the Dims made a lot of power plants spend billions of dollars (added to our power bills) shutting down coal plants and replacing them with "clean burning" natural gas plants. (Remember not too long ago when natural gas was called "clean burning"?)
Then after that Brandon's EO's made the price of natural gas go up, which raises both your natural gas bill and your power bill (since power companies add their fuel costs as riders in the price per kWh). That's one reason in my last power bill, Alabama Power charged 15.7¢/kWh instead of their stated 12.2¢/kWh (after subtracting base monthly fees).
Obama: Under my plan electricity prices will necessarily skyrocket.
Brandon: Oh yeah? I can do better, chump! Somebody hold my Ensure for me...
Me: Sounds like I need to produce as much of my own energy as I can. Time to research solar...
All those plants at Page AZ destroyed. New Mexico is next in line. The APS plants at Farmington were the most polluting I ever saw. Last time I was there in 2015, I followed a thin brown streak in the air from Farmington clear to the plants at Waterflow.
I believe the San Juan plants cleaned up decades ago but those plants are now being decommissioned. What will the Farmington area do when they are gone?
This.
And wood-powered/coal-powered personal generators.
The Farmington Elite will have electricity.
The Farmington peasants will have candles.
