Zelenskyy vows not to retreat from Ukrainian city of Bakhmut

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed Monday not to retreat from Bakhmut as Russian forces encroached on the devastated eastern city they have sought to capture for six months at the cost of thousands of lives.

Less than a week ago, an adviser to Zelenskyy said the defenders might give up on Bakhmut and fall back to nearby positions.

But Zelenskyy on Monday chaired a meeting in which top military brass “spoke in favor of continuing the defense operation and further strengthening our positions in Bakhmut.” Later in his nightly video address, the president reported that his advisers unanimously agreed to press on with the fight, “not to retreat” and to bolster Ukrainian defenses.

His top adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, told The Associated Press that Ukrainian forces around Bakhmut have been grinding down enemy forces, reinforcing their positions and training tens of thousands of Ukrainian military personnel for a possible counteroffensive.

Intense Russian shelling targeted the city in the Donetsk region and nearby villages as Moscow waged a three-sided assault to try to finish off Bakhmut’s resistance.

Indeed. The minuscule amounts of equipment and ammo being supplied to Ukraine, late, has cost literally tens of thousands of Ukrainian lives. As of now, Russian fire superiority is the only thing that allows for these advances around Bakhmut. A comparable size American unit with its standard complement of equipment and supporting air and artillery would have routed the Russians, much as a tiny element of US troops slaughtered hundreds of better-quality (than the current crop of serious felon) Wagner mercs in Syria, thanks to overwhelming fire superiority.

I can’t imagine what Ukraine’s troops must feel in this on again off again retreat. Clearly the troops show videos of them retreating....now Zelensky’s saying they’ll never retreat. I suspect even the idea of retreat slowed funding and military supplies....so he’s back to using his jargon to rile things up again. Clearly there’s as much disarray and bad judgment calls in Ukraine as there are in the Biden administration - both on a path of destroying what they will - but then they are more that just closely linked.

It might surprise you to hear this, but national leaders generally don’t participate in combat directly. Putin certainly doesn’t. In fact, he hasn’t even appeared within Ukrainian artillery range. Whereas Zelensky has verifiably and repeatedly shown up near the front to cut through the chain of command to find out out if the men in the trenches were getting what they needed when they needed it. That act counts for something that no amount of Putin-style verbal bravado will match.
