Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed Monday not to retreat from Bakhmut as Russian forces encroached on the devastated eastern city they have sought to capture for six months at the cost of thousands of lives.
Less than a week ago, an adviser to Zelenskyy said the defenders might give up on Bakhmut and fall back to nearby positions.
But Zelenskyy on Monday chaired a meeting in which top military brass “spoke in favor of continuing the defense operation and further strengthening our positions in Bakhmut.” Later in his nightly video address, the president reported that his advisers unanimously agreed to press on with the fight, “not to retreat” and to bolster Ukrainian defenses.
His top adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, told The Associated Press that Ukrainian forces around Bakhmut have been grinding down enemy forces, reinforcing their positions and training tens of thousands of Ukrainian military personnel for a possible counteroffensive.
Intense Russian shelling targeted the city in the Donetsk region and nearby villages as Moscow waged a three-sided assault to try to finish off Bakhmut’s resistance.

Bakhmut - the party is back on!
In a war of attrition, Russia wins.
The Russians are creating twin salients around Bakhmut. If the Ukrainians have enough men and equipment, they could surround and destroy these salients. Whether that’s better than focusing on other objectives - that’s as much a political as a military question.
Why leave, Wagner is reduced to fighting with shovels and pikes.

This is the best possibility for Ukraine victory - and survival. We will know within two weeks if they can do it. Do they have enough men and ammunition left? Right now, the "horrible truth" is that we cannot tell from the information available to us. All the propaganda cancels out to zero information.
No amount of propaganda from any side of this war will be able to disguise the outcome of the next phase. The fog of propaganda is still too thick for me to guess what that outcome will be.
Zelinsky has one huge advantage over WWII Germany, though - Nuland has promised him the entire NATO arsenal as long as he stays the course. But if he dares to give up the act prematurely, she will have him killed long before Putin ever gets to him.
That’s a flat out lie.
They need to be suing for peace, not sacrificing more people.
It will be Mariupol all over again. Many will die needlessly.
