PARIS (AP) – Roads blocked, oil refineries disrupted, planes grounded and trains halted – unions are threatening to shut down France’s economy this week in what they hope is their toughest riposte yet to President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age.
The first actions are expected Monday, as truckers are being urged to block major highway arteries and interchanges in go-slow actions dubbed “escargot” (snail) operations. Unions plan an open-ended strike on the national rail service starting Monday evening.
The government is bracing for the biggest disruptions on Tuesday, when strikes are expected across multiple sectors and protests are planned in cities across France against the retirement bill. The reform, which would raise the official pension age from 62 to 64 and require 43 years of work to earn a full pension, is currently under debate in parliament.

interesting how war in Ukraine, sky-high energy costs, open borders - do not bother them
But raise the retirement age and they go nuts...
“A man is quicker to forgive the death of his father than the loss of his inheritance.”
― Niccolò Machiavelli
The ,eft east to increase it to the point that hardly anyone will ever live long enough to collect on the taxes they paid in.
I believe French have protested cost of living and immigration and the war in Ukraine...
When you pay 45% in taxes thru your life you should expect some gimme.
It does, the media just doesn’t cover the anti-immigration and anti-NATO demonstrations.
French GIMME THAT crowd is upset.
Private sector unions also kill their hosts (i.e. UAW) but the cost is less direct - unless government steps in.
Changing retirement age is not the answer — folks paid in with benefits defined.
Its the free-loading, supposed disability leechs that ARE the problem.
The newest racket is ‘disabled from covid’
Don’t tap the paid-in-retirement pool of money for the disability crowd.
That and the “poor immigrants”.
What does Klaus Schwab want?
I say low taxes for business.
So pensions must be cut so business isn’t burdened with higher taxes.
The folks in Canada are subordinate to a system that keeps corporate taxes way low at 15 percent.
They must pay sales taxes, income taxes and user fees to sustain their government services.
I’m a capitalist but the crony Global Capitalism that uses government to benefit the interests of business exclusively does not interest me.
It’s the Davos World Economic Forum way IMHO.
The French seem to protest, strike or threaten to strike far more than Americans or English. There’s always something to be in a major snit about.
Truer words were never spoken.
One thing about the French...they don’t mind getting in the gubment’s face.
What happens when you run out of other peoples money.
Correct. It is just a little gimme back.
They have protested the war and they are angry because this is one of the reasons their retirement age is going up.
