Chicago's Mayoral Election on Tuesday May Be a Harbinger of the Future for Other Big Cities: Will the Law-and-Order Candidate Win, Or will it be the Defund-the-Police Candidate?

The first leg of the Chicago mayoral contest will close on Tuesday, Feb. 28, as the nine-candidate field is whittled down to two. The top two finishers will face each other in a runoff election scheduled for April 4, and the battle royale to see which of those two candidates will be the next mayor has degenerated into a real slugfest.

There are four major candidates: incumbent mayor Lori Lightfoot, progressive U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, and Paul Vallas, a former head of schools in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.

Vallas claims to be the law-and-order candidate, while Johnson has indicated he will defund the police and spend the money on “people.” Garcia is a radical congressman, and Lightfoot has presided over a city in the throes of a violent crime wave not seen since the 1990s.

Not much to choose from. And that may be why fully 19% of Chicago voters are undecided three days from the primary election.

But there is a sense of an effort to claw back some of what Chicago has lost. Indeed, there’s a growing movement by more moderate forces in urban areas across the country to push back against the radical left’s policies that have left so many cities unlivable for so many people.

Over the last half century, the middle class in Chicago has disappeared. I’ve posted links to maps showing that. Nearly all of Chicago is either very poor or very rich.

If they use Dominion voting machines, then we know who will win.

"Not much to choose from."

Vallas is leading in the polls but is a POS himself although probably the best of the lot. The prick ended riflery competion in Chicago public schools after 70 successful years of operation. Willie Wilson is the most likeable and maybe okay.

Chicago is well on its way to becoming another Detroit and Baltimore.

Paul Vallas actually straightend out Chicago Public Schools, left it with a $1B budget surplus which his successor, Arnie Duncan quickly squandered.

Arnie Duncan was then Obama’s Education Secretary and did to the schools nationwide, the damage he did to Chicago.

While I don’t believe Chicago can be “saved” the least bad candidate in this race happens to be Paul Vallas. That is NOT to be misconstrued as an endorsement of him, just an acknowledgement of the facts as I know them to be.

They are all Democrats so the outcome will not provide much difference.

That didn’t age well.

Not that I think Vallas can succeed in office, unless there is way more to him than meets the eye. Still, he might be able to slow the decline a bit. But, he’ll have his race working against him.

Wow, is that ever true. I guess Chicago wants a new face of corruption and incompetence.
