Ukraine finds stepping up mobilisation is not so easy
Ukraine finds stepping up mobilisation is not so easy ^ | Feb 25 | unsigned article, Economist staff

Ruslan kubay was surprised to receive a draft notice in late January. Registered as seriously disabled since childhood—Mr Kubay is missing both hands—he falls under a list of automatic exemptions from service. Even more surprising, however, was the reaction of officials at the local registration office in Drohobych, near Lviv. Far from admitting their error, they doubled down and declared him fit for service. Only a social-media post and subsequent national scandal reversed the decision. “I was disgusted by how easily our blind people can start seeing,” he wrote on Facebook.

Mr Kubay’s case was an extreme, but far from isolated, incident. Ukraine has visibly stepped up mobilisation activities in the first two months of this year. For unclear reasons, officials in western Ukraine have been the most aggressive, but the trend is clear across the country. There have been reports of draft notices issued (and sometimes violently enforced) at military funerals in Lviv, checkpoints in Kharkiv, shopping centres in Kyiv and on street corners in Odessa. Popular ski resorts lie deserted despite the first proper snows of the winter—footage of military officials snooping around at the slopes was enough to keep the crowds away. In every town and city across the country social-media channels share information about where recruitment officers might be lurking.

The Economist has been very pro-Ukrainian in the past. The thuggish behavior of the Zelensky regime has even gone a bit too far for them, apparently.

Lots of videos of Ukrainian "recruiters" abducting men off the streets of their cities. And not just young men, the draft now extends to men up to age 60.

FYI.

Normal, adequate mobilization in Ukraine continues, footage from the Carpathians

Forced mobilization in Ukraine

New voluntarily mobilized, this time Cherkasy.

Mobilization in Ukraine

Representatives of the Ukrainian military registration and enlistment offices began to hand out subpoenas in cemeteries. One of the mobilized was given a summons immediately after he buried his brother, who was also called for mobilization.

Odessa, mobilization continues.

"Mobilization in Ukraine is proceeding normally

Drafting men to fight in wars in never popular (with the men being drafted), that's a given.

Still, there is, it seems to me a quantitative difference between an organized draft (as the USA had during the Vietnam war) that had draft boards and allowed both concientious objectors and the alternative of going to jail.

(Which Mohammed Ali famously took, eventually prevailing in the Supreme Court Per Curiam (unanimous position of the entire court) against the Kentucky draft board)

AND

"Press Gangs" where a squad of rough men sieze you off the street, throw you in a van, and a week later you are in a trench in Donbas.

But that's just me. Many illustrious Freepers believe that Ukraine is a wonderful examplar of Democracy at it's best, and that no amount of US treasure is too much to gift them to continue their valiant deeds.

Ukraine is a “client state” of the United States..is not a democracy...Democracies don’t arrest political opponents, and they don’t shut down opposition media, both of which Ukraine has done. Freedom House, a nonpartisan think tank that ranks democracies, has labeled Ukraine “a transitional or hybrid regime....Ukraine ranks 'much lower' than Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — now members of the European Union that are considered full democracies.

They aren’t begging to go fight personally. As warmongers generally do, they sit safely 5000 miles away and cheer all the young Uke and Russian boys dying. When all the Uke boys are gone then the clamor will be to bring back the draft. With a simple majority vote from this warmongering congress, the American draft can return. That is the neocon/globalist dream, an unlimited supply of young American boys to kill while fighting all of their wars.

The war cheerleaders will have us believe that the Ukies are winning, and they will be marching into Crimea, using the Zelensky ( Hitler) Youth if needed.

Either does the Pentagon or NATO. That said, there is no “ winning”, war of attrition, who loses the least. The brain dead West can not understand that tactic, never will.

Russia, with full 24/7 war manufacturing ( since 2015) and no shortages of metal, oil, commodities and a 1.5 million man Army, the answer is clear.

Do realize well publicized information from Russian sources have stated repeatedly they plan on a 30 month war with NATO- that explains much. 30 month war with NATO, not Ukraine. They have the resources, money, and manpower to back it up- the bankrupted collective West DOES NOT.

You are obsessed.

Get a life.

Ukraine doesn’t have to be like the U.S. to be worthy of saving from the grip of a ruthless authoritarian. The Ukrainian people don’t want Russia to control their lives.

Like I said, get a life!

You points are well taken, here are mine
InI one year what has Russia accomplished against its little “brother”
Lost more than half the land that had grabbed, lost thousands of pieces of equipment to the point where they are using t62s and bmp-1s as well as train cars from amusement parks tens if. Not hundreds of thousands of troop killed wounded or captured
They have spent months trying to take the small town of bakmut should be easy if taking on NATO proper is a thing
To this point for the most part Russian logistics, infrastructure, navy and Air Force bases and planes have been safe and secure behind the Russian borders
An attack on NATO and within the first week their logistics, critical infrastructure, manufacturing, Air Force and navy will be gone.
Those trenches and tanks will not be attacked by drones dropping 40mm grenades but 2000lb jdams.
Believe me I know what A-10s can do.
There may be oil, metal and commodities but if they still exist they will be moving no where
My 2 cents

When Zelensky’s loosing he only says “It’s difficult”..... You only have to look at the landbridge map to “see” who has ‘gained’ the land....and increasingly so. Just a week ago Russia still controlled 40,000 sq miles of Ukrainian land, entirely in the south and east comprising mosly of it’s landbridge....which is one of it’s goals.

Anti-war protests are happening across Europe.... In Germany, the UK, France, etc., oppose sending more money & weapons to Ukraine, demand peace talks, & are sick & tired of NATO. But these protests are being ignored in the media for the most part.

Berlin....

You assume the mighty US Air Force will have any airfields to operate from. Russian MOD has stated they can take out every collective West airfield within the reach of their hypersonic cruise missiles, including ones in England.

If you are as familiar with US aviation forces as I am ( I assume you are) you know the logistics of moving supplies, maintenance, equipment, arms, ammo, 6,000 miles in quantities needed is not easily accomplished, and without operating airfields impossible.

Vlads logistical train is less than 600 kilometers, the US 6,000 miles.Something to think about.

I know what they say but they have not been able to destroy uke Air Force so they will be able to destroy every NATO air base, and with what? Doing a fine job of depleting their missile stocks and you also assume these missies if he still has will hit their target
Also don’t have to move 6000 miles plenty of stock prepositioned. Sweden, France, Germany Poland all have effective air forces then there are the buffs B-1s and B-2s
Speaking of logistics. How’s that been going for Russia? With little to no attacks on Russian infrastructure they have extreme difficulty moving supplies 50 km to front let alone 600 and 600 km will be the same as 6000 if rail hubs and bridges are gone if they have anything left to move

Russian doctrine says it can’t deal will NATO aircraft dominance that is why they put so much stock in sams, well I am sure they have a lot left but not as many as they did
Hope it doesn’t come to that but you have a much higher regard for their abilities and capabilities than I do, and that is fine your opinion

Some of the biggest rallies during Vietnam war were pro war for lack of better word, but they were largely ignored just because these rallies exist does not make them majority
People have right to express now try an anti war rally in Russia and see what happens
