Faced with the undeniable fact city kids attending charters schools do far better on state exams than those stuck in the regular public-school system, critics routinely complain that charters “teach to the test” — as if that’s somehow a bad thing.
Tests, after all, measure what kids are supposed to learn. Schools that don’t “teach to the test” effectively aren’t teaching at all. In other words, the critics are just avoiding the fact that public charter schools work — and, most embarrassing to the vested interests that depend on the regular system, work far better for lower-income minority children.
Indeed, our reporting shows that city black students, in particular, face a far better future if they attend a charter, with far higher percentages scoring proficient in both math and English.

Funny. When I attended school board meetings in the 2000’s, the teachers blamed poor performance on having to teach for the tests.
Teacher unions always say it is about the kids, but it is really about tenure, the paycheck, the pension and the other benefits. Competition is sorely needed as an alternative to public schools.
Teachers unions competing against themselves. Is that real competition?
When my kids were in grade school in the 2000’s, parental volunteers were there everyday. (I was one of them.)
Doubt that happens anymore.
Some parents today seem to be OK with social media and teachers raising their kids.
Any human being who is curious and learns to read has a wide open world in which to live a full life. Public education mitigates against that notion.
Absolutly, when I taught I knew the material that would be tested in the future and made certain that I covered it. There was also time to teach things that held interest for the kids. So I did that too. Teaching was great and we all enjoyed the class. Win Win, right?
Oh and if the test showed that some kids did not get some part of the course? I was shown that by my department head and the next year I would revise that unit to get more success the next test. That is how I thought it should work.
I’ve heard the same commentary from Ivy administrations when addressing why their students aren’t scoring as high as those from the state schools. “They’re just teaching them how to take a test, not how to think.”
All of life IS a test!
Independent schools teaching independent thought are the “deep fight” that will us to win the close battle easily. Unfortunately, is about $1,000,000 to start a charter school - that money has to be raised. Care for our nation? Find a charter school to support, especially one just starting out.
Democrats have already figured out the flaw - so we don’t need to ‘run with it’ yet. It needs to be something our governors offer and push for...
What does “teaching to the test” mean?
It means focusing the school day on gaining proficiency in reading comprehension, being able to write correctly spelled and grammatical essays, and knowing math. To the exclusion of all the PC crap.
This is EXACTLY what low performing students need for success.
And THAT is exactly why Democrats oppose them.
