'A Great, Great, Great Man': The Cringey Gushing Over Jimmy Carter
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 24 Feb 2023 | Andrew Ferguson

Is it the very unseemliness of the death watch over poor Jimmy Carter that has forced everyone to talk balls?

We human beings often react this way when we catch ourselves doing something that's in poor taste or otherwise undignified. We break wind in a reception line, we tell a dirty joke within earshot of a toddler, and in our mortification we turn on the motor mouth. Hovering ghoulishly over the deathbed of a celebrated stranger for endless days, as members of our nation's press corps are doing, waiting for him to hurry up and croak already and wandering the streets of his tiny hometown to find a resident who hadn't been interviewed half a dozen times by the BBC, is one of those circumstances of cringing self-embarrassment.

So we blather. We talk balls. We say anything to fill the silence that might call attention to the shabbiness of what we're doing. We say things like … oh I don't know … like, Jimmy Carter "moves humanity forward every single day." Or, maybe, that he had "the sweetest and best parts of our character." We might even describe Jimmy Carter as "probably the most intelligent, hard-working, and decent man to have occupied the Oval Office in the 20th century."

One reason is that mean man, Ronald Reagan, beat the pants off of Jimmah.

Carter WAS the worst president ever. But Now he is third worst. Its a two way tie between Obama and Biden for worst and runner up.

Until the Democrats came up with Obama and his puppet Biden,I didn’t think the Democrats could have come up with a worse president than Jimma.

Man, even in my youthful bliss I remember that as a WT*? moment. My first vote was for Reagan to oust Carter.

I agree that Carter was a horrible president, but I will forever love him for his very visible faith in Christ and the works that he has long done in response to Jesus’ death on the Cross - for him and all who believe that Jesus was the Son of God.

Privately, a lot of Democrats despise Carter, too.

I know Clinton and Carter hate each others’ guts.

Very bad president, but a dignified example of an ex-president.

Jimmy Carter’s hatred of Israel and America caused him to betray the Shah of Iran and create the Middle East we so love today.

If he had not betrayed the Shah, the entire ME was on its way to becoming a reasonably stable (albeit not great) place.

It all depends how we are going to judge Jimmy Carter.

Do we judge him based on his performance as president? Do we judge him based on humanitarian work he has done? Do we judge him based on his Christianity?

I would suggest every one of us has a mixed Legacy, depending on what aspects of someone’s life you were looking at.

Jimmy Carter was probably the best man to ever hold the office of prez, but he also has to be among the worst 5 prez’ of all time.
Jimmy would have been a helluva man to have for a neighbor, but he should have never been in politics.

Very true, and well said, but 1) we are more cynical about politicians now than we were even back in Carter's day and 2) it's better to discover that people had a good side on your own than to be forever told about how noble and decent they are.

I agree, Dilbert. We all tend to see & judge others (and ourselves, I think) through our own personal lenses.

I’m thankful that God does the same.

I, for one, am not anguishing over his impending demise. That man is responsible for more economic misery than almost all of the other Presidents we’ve had to date (except Biden).

When he was my Governor, he took a massive state budget surplus and burned it into the ground and eventually turned his ‘talents’ toward the whole country. I get it - America was sick of the over-inflated Nixon Watergate debacle and decided to make a change. It chose poorly.

The man has had his 98 years. I will not mourn him or give it a second thought when it happens.
