An array of U.S. Jewish leaders are sounding alarms about what they see as a threat to Israel’s democracy posed by its new government, fearing it will erode the independence of its judiciary and legal protections for minority groups.
While some Jewish leaders dismiss such fears are overblown, a solid majority of mainstream Jewish American groups are voicing unprecedented criticism of the Israeli government, raising fears about a growing rift between Israel and the predominately liberal American Jewish population. Some progressive voices have gone even further, saying Israel can never truly be a democracy as long as it rules over millions of Palestinians who do not have the right to vote.
Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu took office as prime minister in December after the country’s fifth election in less than four years. His coalition allies include ultra-Orthodox parties and ultranationalist parties dominated by hardline West Bank settlers.
They see a planned judicial overhaul as threatening the checks and balances on Israel’s government — echoing concerns voiced by tens of thousands of Israeli street protesters in recent weeks.
“Here we are, about to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jewish democratic state of Israel that we love,” said Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, a liberal denomination representing the largest U.S. Jewish religious population. Yet that anniversary is approaching amid fears for “the weakening of Israel’s democratic foundations,” Jacobs said.
Rabbi Moshe Hauer, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, an umbrella group for Orthodox Jews in the U.S., said Netanyahu’s government and its political opposition share responsibility for the tensions.
“Is the government’s initial proposal extreme and in need of correction? Probably,” Hauer said. But he said there’s room for compromise.

Indeed. A former employer of mine was an Orthodox Jew and he said most US jews are JINOs (Jews In Name Only) and the only Jewish thing about them is their last name. He was also adamant in his business philosophy to never do business with a JINO, Persian or Arab unless they pay you in advance.
Man alive! He had a genuine distrust and dislike for those groups of people, but he was honest to a fault and funny as a heart attack. He finally got fed up with the secular/leftist Jews here, closed his business, sold his home and emigrated to Israel.

An array of people in three-piece suits with money and mailing lists are projecting their own issues on Israel and claiming to be “Jewish leaders” even though nobody in the actual Jewish communities in America cares a wit for their opinion and gets nothing from them that could justify this conceit that they are “leaders” of anything. They are nominally Jewish, but so what.
Why should Israel bow to Communist Moloch-worshippers in America just because the latter claims distant ethnic heritage ?

I hear that a lot, about various groups and individuals, slowly creeping rightward with all the leftist craziness pushing them there.
I tend to wonder how many of them are moving at all.
I think the media, the beltway and the coastal metro types are just moving more and more left, and everyone not going with them look like they are more to the right by comparison.
Articles like this are written for the sole purpose of trying to wrangle them farther left along with them. It’s all about pushing that overton window and shaming those who don’t move with it.

Yep. What is happening in Israel is that the Orthodox Jews massively out reproduced the Reform Jews.
The same is happening in the US though unfortunately Orthodox Jews were the smaller community so it will take longer for them to become a dominant share of the Jewish population in the US. Still, they average 4.1 kids while Reform Jews average 1.7. They are on average, 40 years old vs 52 for Reform Jews and there is an especially large cohort that is younger. You don’t have to be a math genius to see where this is going.

I presume by "US" Jews the author refers to US residence. Criticism by those who don't hold Israeli citizenship, the vast majority, it's none of their business. Getting the courts out of legislative and executive decisions would seem to be in line with our Constitution and traditions which should please Americans. Of course leftists would prefer a judiciary, as long as it's leftist, making estra-Constitutional decisions here. The key being a leftist judiciary.
