The first time I voted for president, I was a college student in New York City in 1980. I was intrigued by Jimmy Carter as he campaigned for re-election, wondering why a southern white man had strong support in the Black community. The sad news that the 98-year old former president is under home hospice care brought back memories of those days of crisis.
That summer, I had a chance to see Carter at the NAACP national convention in Miami Beach. It occurred shortly after a riot over police brutality in the predominantly Black neighborhoods of Liberty City and Overton in Miami. In December 1979, four white police officers were charged with the beating death of motorcyclist Arthur McDuffie, an insurance salesman and Marine veteran. The trial presented incriminating evidence to an all-white jury — which acquitted the officers on May 17, 1980.

I voted for Carter. Still would have done it in ‘80. 4 years later RR did what he said he would do so I changed. Is this about me?
The GOP gave him the office in ‘76. Think Watergate. Gerald Ford couldn’t find Poland on a map. The only thing worse than the Robert Dole VP pick was the Nixon pardon. Carter will be remembered as a decent man. His POTUS failures will be forgiven by the MSM and a classy GOP reaction.
It was Carter who called Reagan a war monger. It was Rosylyn who claimed RR ‘made us feel comfortable’ with our prejudices.
Ford also screwed up the Swine Flu vaccine.
A lot of the crap that is happening now with the Brandon administration reminds me of the Carter years.
“Why Jimmy Carter deserved my vote — and that of other Black Americans”
So did you still feel that way after his term was up?
It puzzles me that after Pres. Trump raised the standard of living for many blacks the majority of them (I believe) voted for Biden who has put many of them back in the basement.
I agree. Anyone that flew those early “Century” fighters deserves respect.
Carter is a racist (the idiot author apparently chose to ignore his infamous 1970 contest against ex-Gov. Carl Sanders) and virulent anti-Semite leftist who placed numerous judicial Communists on the federal bench. Absolutely rotten phony to his core and a very cold and calculating individual (he is not stupid as many think - he was a Wilsonian Communist himself). He played his role in turning America into the disaster it has become, and look forward to a full media canonization when he kicks off.
Okay then. No worries.
Okay then. No worries.
Unfortunately, it’s a voting pathology that has been in place for the better part of 60 years (and in the north, almost 90 years). It took decades to break the White affiliation with the Democrat party in the South (in some cases, 140 years). In many contests in the South in the 1930s, Whites voted over 95% Demonrat. The party used the same racist-scare tactics on Whites to keep them on the plantation as they do with Blacks today.
“why a southern white man had strong support in the Black community.”
Democrat
That is all
Most southern whites hated all black when they grew up in the 30/40/50’s like Carter and me....
So? Most northern whites did too.
My first vote for president and my LAST vote for a Democrat.
I was young, dumb, and full of ... well you know the rest.
Barak was being mean when he referred to bitter clingers. That wasn’t too bad as he didn’t need to go as lower as the rest did. MSM covered for him.
Think ‘a fish rots from the head’ and my favorite ‘ a basket of deplorables’. It’s not good to go too deep but when a party can get away with calling us all racists they’ll keep going.
there are millions of us ...
incompetent
<>The GOP gave him the office in ‘76. <>
Not so. Thanks to Nixon’s abdication, the rat nominee, no matter who he was, was going to win in 1976.
Jimmy Carter is a racist. Did not like Israel either.
And Carter was a peanut farmer in over his head, which he proved continuously in elected office and beyond.
Precisely
