The first time I voted for president, I was a college student in New York City in 1980. I was intrigued by Jimmy Carter as he campaigned for re-election, wondering why a southern white man had strong support in the Black community. The sad news that the 98-year old former president is under home hospice care brought back memories of those days of crisis.
That summer, I had a chance to see Carter at the NAACP national convention in Miami Beach. It occurred shortly after a riot over police brutality in the predominantly Black neighborhoods of Liberty City and Overton in Miami. In December 1979, four white police officers were charged with the beating death of motorcyclist Arthur McDuffie, an insurance salesman and Marine veteran. The trial presented incriminating evidence to an all-white jury — which acquitted the officers on May 17, 1980.

Without the Carter presidency, there probably wouldn’t have been Reagan.
I was the same age as you. From the Carter presidency I also remember the Iranian Revolution . . . and the hostage crisis.
That's what I was getting at, though I guess I did a poor job of making the point.
Another dumbass “gimmedat”; living for free sh!t that Democrats pay for from whitey’s tax dollars.........3 generations of welfare families, with very, very, very few ever having held a REAL job in their lives (unless they are employed by some government agency, in a do-nothing capacity).
Cater was one of the worst presidents ever - and lost in a well-deserve landslide.
Anyone here remember gas lines? I was a teen at the time and couldn’t drive the car unless I filled it up - sometimes waiting an hour or more.
I also remember having to set the thermostat “no higher than 68 degrees” during the coldest winter in 100 years (I lived in Colorado at the time).
Reagan ended that.
Honest...to a fault. Sometimes Americans need to hear that the glass is half full. But he did help build a lot of houses, whose owners than got foreclosed on, Wall St. bought them up and turned them into rentals.
10 This event in the Carter days resulted in:
20 Less police protection in black areas.
30 Which led to more crime in black areas. Thus the outcry in the 1990's was it's racist to not protect black areas as much as white areas.
40 Which led to more police activity where more of the crimes were: black areas.
50 Which led to the outcry that it's racist to jail more blacks than whites.
50 GOTO 20
The Republicans freed them only to have the Democrats enslave them again.
Stop posting this crap.
Jimmy Carter was a typical Dixiecrat who used anti-black racial campaigning to win white votes right up until his 1970 election. Then he put his finger up to see which way the wind was blowing and switched to being more tolerant of blacks. Any black who voted for Carter on racial grounds was being willfully ignorant.

Jimmy Carter...The best President the Ayatollahs of Iran and Omar Torrijos of Panama ever had!
And the US is still suffering from Carter’s errors!
Many of the thing Carter gets blamed for in the economy would have happened no matter who was President.
That said, you are correct. Had Ford won and faced much the same issues the anyone but you people would have helped get a Democrat in the White House in ‘80 ... probably Kennedy.
Carter was and still is an idiot.
As Carter finds himself in his last days, I hope he can take some comfort in knowing that he is no longer considered the worst President in recent history.
Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show
With some smart a** New York Jew
And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox
And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too
Well he may be a fool but he’s our fool
If they think they’re better than him they’re wrong
So I went to the park and I took some paper along
And that’s where I made this song
We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we laugh too loud
We’re too dumb to make it in no Northern town
And we’re keepin’ the n*****s down
We got no necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol’ boys from Tennessee
And colleges men from LSU
Went in dumb, come out dumb too
Hustlin’ ‘round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin’ drunk every weekend at the barbecues
And they’re keepin’ the n*****s down
We are rednecks, we’re rednecks
We don’t know our a**
From a hole in the ground
We’re rednecks, we’re rednecks
And we’re keeping the n*****s down
Now your northern n*****’s a negro
You see he’s got his dignity
Down here we’re too ignorant to realize
That the North has set the n***** free
Yes he’s free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he’s free to be put in a cage
On the South Side of Chicago
And the West Side
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In Hough in Cleveland
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In East St. Louis
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In Fillmore in San Francisco
And he’s free to be put in a cage
In Roxbury in Boston
They’re gatherin’ ‘em up from miles around
Keepin’ the n*****s down
We’re rednecks, we’re rednecks
We don’t know our a**
From a hole in the ground
We’re rednecks, we’re rednecks
We’re keeping the n*****s down
We are keeping the n*****s down

Not all democrats belong to the Klan, but all Klansmen were democRATS!
Jimmy helped destroy the growing Nuclear energy program during his brief stint in the White House. Just that bonehead move set back the US from what could have been cheap affordable energy.
Carter and the Hollywood idiots.
I stand by the term idiot for Carter.
Jimmah’s last hope of reelection ended at Desert One.
