Nearly 30 percent of work remains remote as workers dig in

The pandemic may be winding down, but the work-from-home revolution marches on.

Nearly 30 percent of all work happened at home in January, six times the rate in 2019, according to WFH Research, a data-collection project. In Washington and other large urban centers, the share of remote work is closer to half. In the nation’s biggest cities, entire office buildings sit empty.

The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the American workplace. The share of all work performed at home rose from 4.7 percent in January 2019 to 61 percent in May 2020. Some economists consider the remote-work boom the greatest change to the labor market since World War II.

“It’s affected so many things,” said Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford University economist and WFH researcher. “It’s affected city structure. It’s affecting days of the week that people play sport: golf, tennis. It’s affecting retail. It’s completely skewed, mostly in a positive way, the American economy.”

Guy at my company told me hates coming into the office 3 times a week and would rather roll out of bed in his underwear then come in the office.

I’ve worked 100% remote since 2009.

I retired right before covid so I missed the whole work from home thing....however of all the people I’ve talked to on the subject it’s about 50/50 like versus hate working from home.

Within 60 days of this starting in 2020 we told all of our 400 employees that they either came back to the office or were unemployed. Guess what, they all came back. Imagine that.

All the high rises in downtown Los Angeles are at least half empty, there is a story today about the owner of 2 of them defaulting on both. It seems like 50/50 home and office is the new norm, and because of it Commercial Real Estate is not looking good at all.

The Commercial Real Estate bubble is amazing to behold.

It is like a magician spinning plates in the air.

Eventually the magician will collapse in exhaustion.

Was on a phone conference a few years ago with probably 20-30 people from around the country.....you could hear the sound of water splashing from someone logged into the call and eventually somebody asked what was. One of our Deloitte contractors participating in the meeting finally admitted he was on the call from home taking a bath.

Very professional 👌

I couldn't imagine that because we're seeing the opposite. Not only are people switching to new jobs if forced back into the office, too many of the sub-consultants already live in different states and couldn't possibly commute to the office.

I was surprised to see paired departures where two in a chain would tell each other, "If you go, I go, because I'm not going to get stuck with all this", but even worse, we're now witnessing cascading departures where one leaves after the other to avoid being stuck with the work as it gets dumped on the next person.

We have the C Team doing what the A Team did previously and the only way out is to hire more sub-consultants from farther away.

For many companies these days ordering everyone into the office just means the most talented 10% go to work for the competition.

What is left are the dregs.

what timi g for businesses to consolidate their office footprint, AND, what timing for more secure office paperwork secure sites to sprout!

Instead of office space filled with cabinets, and bei g charged per sq ft, secure offsite storage seems better.

They told us to pack everything out of our cubicles. They are going to convert to hotel space. We are hiring people who won’t be able to come into the office because they live 100’s of miles away. Some people have elected to go hybrid but I moved 35 minutes away and all but one of my computers in the office died during Covid. Thank Gitness for version control

It has created a type of caste system. People who come into the office are on the radar of management. The people who don’t come in are not considered to be serious candidates for movement up.

I occasionally go onto a few job boards--just to see what the market is like.

My number one priority/benefit/search term is "Remote."

If I do change jobs, it will be 100% remote. I will not go back into the office voluntarily.

Many of our production plant office staff work remotely. In fact, in September of this year they asked all of us who could work remotely to do so for the next couple of months while the excess office space was demolished and remodeled to make more production space available.

I always felt it was worthwhile to go into the office one day a week just to keep my finger on the pulse of the production people and have been doing so since July 2020.

In January, they asked me to do three days a week and I agreed to do so even if I thought it was stupid considering what we just did a few weeks ago with the remodeling.

Last week, they asked me to come in five days a week. I explained why this was stupid and the best they could come back with was that someone in corporate management though it was a good idea and applied to everyone in the company except sales.

I told them someone in corporate management needs to decide what work I am doing now won't get done anymore because I will be spending the time driving back and forth instead of working.

“The people who don’t come in are not considered to be serious candidates for movement up.”

What is happening—and happening fast—is that the people who work at home (whether talented or not) are no longer worried about “moving on up” to the Penthouse—because the gain in quality in life far outweighs any monetary benefit of future promotions.

As more and more talented people get this attitude there will be a new caste system—talent working at home—and dregs managing the operation at corporate headquarters.

Eventually the Board of Directors will notice and fire senior management—and new management will be (mostly) working at home.
