Suspect in fatal hit-and-run has no driver's license, 164 citations
Honolulu Star-Advertiser via Yahoo ^ | February 18, 2023 | Peter Boylan

Mitchel Yoshiji Miyashiro pleaded not guilty to driving without a license nine days before he allegedly struck and killed 16-year-old Sara Yara and injured another female student who were in a marked crosswalk.

The 45-year-old man arrested in connection with the hit-and-run incident that killed a McKinley High School student has no driver's license and 164 prior traffic citations, according to state court records.

Mitchel Yoshiji Miyashiro pleaded not guilty to driving without a license nine days before he allegedly struck and and injured another female student who were in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kamakee Street near the school's athletic field shortly after 6 :40 a.m. Wednesday.

Miyashiro turned himself in to Honolulu police at about 6 :30 p.m. Thursday and was arrested on suspicion of collisions involving death or serious bodily injury, collisions involving bodily injury and first-degree negligent homicide.

He was released while police continue their investigation. Yara's friend was reported in good condition.

The question of how someone with a record of 164 traffic crimes and citations and no driver's license was able to get behind the wheel of a car in Hawaii remains unanswered.

"The driver in this case has been repeatedly cited for driving without a license and other traffic violations. Hawaii law allows individuals like this to be imprisoned, " state House Speaker Scott Saiki told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in a statement. "If the driver had not been imprisoned in the past, we need to understand why, and whether we need to strengthen our laws. If they had been, this incident may not have occurred."

It took 164 tries, but this scumbag finally managed to kill someone. He should have been locked up for life many years ago.

Clearly, neither the author of this article nor most others have ever lived in Hawaii: it is Crime Central and the cops are at the center of all of it. We’d all be better off if you sank the islands for a couple of weeks and when they popped to the surface, started all over again.

Those allowing this in the system should be punished along with the criminal. They will give their decisions a serious thought before inflicting pain on the rest of us

Never should have been a State. The monarchy should be rightfully restored.

In a lot of cities, the dirty secret is that its much more profitable to continue to fine people like this than suspend their licenses.

I'm guessing it's because they let him keep his car keys.

pleaded not guilty to driving without a license

So much wrong with this whole thing. But the bit above is something I just do not understand about the law.

"You are accused of driving without a license. How do you plead?"
"Not guilty, your honor."
"Okay. The state has no record of ever issuing you a license. Can you produce a license?"
"No, your honor."
"Okay. You are a dumbass. You are wasting the court's time. You plead Not Guilty when you are manifestly guilty. Quick trial's are good. This one's over: 5 years in prison for you."

Suspend his license? He didn’t have a license.

I watch a lot of these sov cit in court YT videos. What happens is the DA JUST WAIVES the no license, no reg, no insurance charges and packages multiple - even DOZENS - of tickets into “incorrect lane usage” or some such minor infraction, then charges $25.

And if the charges somehow make it to the judge, HE/SHE just says “get a license” but takes no action when it never happens - just adjourns for 4 months at a time for more time.

Basically, following the laws for DL, registration and insurance and other moving violations is for CHUMPS like us.

In Philadelphia at least, that doesn't matter. The traffic court fines them and lets them go. No jail time. The court knows they will drive again and doesn't care unless they kill someone. Then the court has to do something and acts outraged. But its a scam.

I was sure this story was out of California - where illegals driving without licenses, insurance or car registration is A-OK, even though it is required for legal residents of the state.

Cops can’t even tow their cars any longer - it is OK for someone else to come and get the car - so the illegal can have it back because he “has to use it to get to work.”

They also drive drunk all the time too, but you won’t read that in the media.

One of the biggest problems in society today is that there are no consequences for people’s actions.

Defund (and handcuff) the police, zero bail, no arrest for misdemeanors.

IF they go to jail...

Early release, parole, endless appeals.

Just say NO, to crime.

Do the crime, do the time. ALL OF IT!

Yep - and then five minutes after those chowderheads took over, they'd sell out to the Chinese.

Ever worked with Polynesians? I'd hate to try to guess their median I.Q.
