Exclusive: Ex-Russian military bomber engineer seeks asylum at U.S. border, offers military secrets

When someone shows up at a U.S. port of entry asking for admission and claiming to have information of interest to the United States, CBP and the Department of Homeland Security are tasked with verifying the information provided. If the information is confirmed as true and the person is deemed credible, they are then passed off to the FBI.

“The deal with a walk-in is his ID has to be verified and his story checked as well — that could take some time,” explained one U.S. intelligence official.

“If and only if he checks out, meaning he is who he says he is and worked where he said he did, if that were to happen, then the FBI would take over and whisk him away to probably a safe house where he’d be questioned.”

For about a week and a half, CBP and the DHS worked to verify the man’s identity and former place of employment. By around Jan. 11 he was deemed credible and of potential interest to the U.S., and was passed to the FBI for further questioning, according to two government officials.

The DHS and the Department of Defense did not respond to Yahoo News’ requests for comment. The FBI also declined to comment.

The engineer is believed to be inside the U.S. and is still being questioned by U.S. officials. He is likely being questioned about the restart of the Blackjack production, and the revamped or upgraded versions believed to have been worked on during the time of the Russian engineer’s employment."

He is also likely being asked about matters unrelated to the bomber jet, which could include everything from the email system, software, staffing and manufacturer used by the aircraft production facility — information that could be used to carry out targeted cyberattacks

Ukraine ping

The nice thing about being both a beacon of hope for the entire world *and* its economic juggernaut* is you get a regular stream of walk-in defectors. The latest is a Russian who claims to have worked on the TU-160 aka the Blackjack supersonic bomber. His participation in anti-invasion protests put him on Putin’s radar screen. He was presumably unfazed by Russian reports of Americans going cold and hungry, thanks to ineffective and counterproductive sanctions on Russia.

* The Bulgarian propagandist Daniel Ivandjiiski aka Tyler Durden at Zero Hedge, and Martin Armstrong the Ponzi fraudster at Armstrong Economics would have their readers believing that the US is on the verge of societal and economic collapse. Defectors to the US are presumably skeptical. It’s said the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Since Armstrong and Ivandjiiski continue residing in the US instead of Russia, one might be tempted to interpret that as a vote of confidence, and not in Russia’s favor.

What nonsense. It's mush like this that has our Southern border wide open.

“While similar in appearance to the American B-1 Lancer, the Tu-160 is a different class of combat aircraft; its primary role being a standoff missile platform (strategic missile carrier)”

More than one million Russian speakers fled the Dunbass to Russia related to Zelensky's artillery bombardments, beginning in 2014. BTW, you said you were going to fight for Zelensky. What happened?

Probably because Russia has the same climate as Canadia but with cheap vodka instead of weak whiskey.

On the old FR, getting what might be an important defector would have been seen as great news and everyone would be happy.

[On the old FR, getting what might be an important defector would have been seen as great news and everyone would be happy.]

Between the periodic purges, and the ravages of Father Time, some were shut out, and others are simply in a better place. A good number of the remaining ones seem to hew towards a Charles Lindberghian view of the world while others are principally driven by older loyalties or allegiances to other sovereigns. So it’s Free Republic for some value of “Free” and some value of “Republic”.
