“An Attack On American Identity”: NFL Fans Bitterly React To Inclusion Of “Divisive” Black National Anthem At Super Bowl
American Tribune ^ | February 13, 2023 | Staff

While fans universally praised country music artist Chris Stapleton over his beautiful, tear-jerking rendition of America’s national anthem, plenty of people remain sharply divided over the inclusion of the so-called black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” for the first time in the Super Bowl’s long history.

To be sure, the performer sang admirably, and the critique lands squarely on both the NFL for forcing this racist, divisive song in the heart of a sports contest as well as the woke ruling class that seems immorally focused on skin color.

“The performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at Sunday’s Super Bowl marks the first time the Black National Anthem has been performed on-field at the NFL’s championship game,” Yahoo! News reported. “Actress and singer Sheryl Lee Ralph belted out the song prior to kickoff on Sunday.”

The internet immediately went berserk, calling out the NFL for capitulating to the woke mob as well as featuring a song meant not to unite, but further divide. It’s also blatantly redundant, as this country already has a national anthem – one that is meant for everyone.

Arizona’s 2022 gubernatorial candidate and rumored 2024 Senate candidate Kari Lake earned props across the conservative space of Twitter for refusing to stand for the song.

Ironically, but not accidentally, the fake outrage mob pounced against Lake for defiling their sacred song (as of two years ago) but for years demanded everyone accept Colin Kaepernick and other millionaire black athletes kneel against their supposed oppression.

Twitter comments went absolutely nuts.

Lavern Spicer said: “The Black National Anthem is the Star Spangled Banner. The White National Anthem is the Star Spangled Banner. The Mixed National Anthem is the Star Spangled Banner. If you live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, your National Anthem is the Star Spangled Banner.”

“Spoiler Alert: The people pushing the “Black National Anthem” aren’t trying to unify the country, they’re trying to divide it,” conservative account ALX said

“My “black” National Anthem is the same anthem I’ve been singing since I was a child. The same one children of all races have been singing. My National Anthem never needed a color. Do they want racism to die, or do they want to keep finding ways to divide us all?” a user rhetorically asked.

James Lindsay, long an opponent of woke identity politics, clearly outlined the issue, writing, “There’s no such thing. This is a mid-level provocation with the goal of starting a dialectical fight about how it is a real thing and the concept of “American” isn’t suitable to describe Americans. It’s an attack on American identity using race.”

Another user stated that “[h]aving a black national anthem is just another way that Democrats keep us divided.”

And conservative commentator Nick Adams blasted the actions, saying. “This song is disgraceful and disgusting. There is NO SUCH THING as a “black national anthem. This is the most egregious escalation of racial division since the Civil War. My expectations for the NFL were already low, but this is a whole new level of woke stupidity.”

Yahoo! News observed what fans have slowly been seeing creep into their television sets and stadiums has been a slow burn. While the Super Bowl featured the divisive song for the first time ever, it began its operations in 2020 after the controversial death of George Floyd. Yahoo! wrote:

The historic performance was the first time the song has been performed in an official capacity on a Super Bowl game field. Two years ago, Alicia Keys first performed the ballad during a pre-recorded Super Bowl broadcast. In 2022, singer Mary Mary gave a performance of the song from outside of the Super Bowl stadium in Inglewood, Calif., notes Billboard.

I love reading through the threads about the NFL. They are mostly filled with self righteousness—stating how long it’s been since they’ve watched a game. And then they proceed to tell you how this particular thing is wrong.

It is hilarious and sad at the same time.

My only beef is that they played all of the stanzas of the hymn, but only the first the the Star Spangled Banner.

In the end, it’s not a horrible song. It’s not in place of the national anthem. It makes people happy.

If you are bothered by it, change the channel and come back later. Or not.

The NFL is going to do what makes their fans and players happy. Honestly, if you aren’t watching—they don’t care about you.

Was that a strip club sort of routine?

I had no idea what was up with all those guys wearing those puffy hazmat suit type outfits.

I had no idea what was up with everyone reaching for some of the danger zones on the body.

And I had no idea what was up with those platforms rising up from the ground and dancers in the air and dancers down below.

Checked in for 5 seconds of early pre-game show to see rappers doing the same rap as ever.

Checked in for 5 seconds to see the coin toss interrupted by the NFL digging up the body of Pat Tillman yet again, to cover themselves in his glory and divert attention from their debasement of the sport and the Nation.

Checked in for 5 seconds at halftime to see Rihanna floating in mid-air.

Checked in for 5 seconds at the beginning of the 4th quarter to see the Chiefs score a TD.

That’s my Superbowl 666 experience, and the most attention I’ve given the NFL all season. Fuggem.

Bless you!

We probably have to take more layers off the Onion.

Goodell is in the game, but he’s just a front, sucks to be him. He’s just the screen.

"Really it was in a block of “America” type songs along with Ragged old Flag and America the Beautiful, nobody introduced as any kind of anthem."

Oh? And did everyone fall silent and stand attentively/solemnly during the performance of those other "America" type songs? No, no they didn't.

The problem is—there is a storm coming—and the NFL is a symptom and a warning.

I compare it to the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Ignoring it does not make it go away.

That was the half time show. Not the pregame “pageantry.”

Both are/were ridiculous.

At English Rugby FA Cup playoffs, the tradition is to sing “Abide With Me” before every match. Its amazing to see 89K people singing it.

I’ve attended Rugby tournaments around the world, and the Brit expats (who tended to be conservative/traditionalists) often would lead the crowd singing various hymns during the matches (or at least they did 20 years ago - haven’t been to many since)

It would be fantastic if they started singing Christian hymns being all football games.

As long as we are going to divide up America, I vote they play the Navajo National Anthem at the next Superbowl. When the nation called, this oppressed people answered and made a decisive difference in the worst campaigns in the South Pacific in WWII.

And that problem is what? A race war? That is a bunch of hyperbole.

We are not headed to a race war, at least not in a vast, vast majority of the country. You watch too much TV and read too many targeted stories.

Making statements like that makes folks sound like right wing snowflakes. You sound as triggered as abortion rights fools.

The extremes in this country are, “extreme.” That applies to the right and the left. Don’t fall to their rhetoric.

I had no idea what was up with everyone reaching for some of the danger zones on the body.

That's why it was half-assed. Rihanna is no longer a slim 22 year-old who would pole-dance dressed in Latex. She's a slow-moving, pregnant dominican madre who is definitely heading into her middle-aged years.

Which if absolutely OK for any famous singer who is singing her previous hits.

So why the various crotch-grabs and other genital hand-gestures? Just to signal to her crowd: "I'm still as sexualized and low-class as you remember me!?"

I understand, but I think to say that they just threw it in there with a stream of songs by other musicians with no thought of why it is in there (as another poster said, why would people make a big deal about a religious hymn) seems like a deliberate avoidance of an issue.

The song is part and parcel of BLM and the racial grievance crowd. That is the reality. So if they played it with the league and network collaboration, it was for a reason.

People are angry about this embrace and inclusion of what is felt with some justification to be racially tinged due to the common modern day use of the song (this is not disputable that the song is used for that political/ideological purpose if one follows the news).

I don’t fault you for not being angry or offended, but I think to dismiss people’s anger at this as unfounded is a narrow view of it.

The left-—they have been dividing this country since Andrew Jackson. Black against white, gay against straight, Christians against non Christian, Rich against Poor, trans against based. They are the party of slavery, the KKK, Lim Crowe, Dred Scott, Eugenics, etc-—and they have once again created a separate Anthem, a separate schooling, colleges, etc. The left are still racists!

I pretty much agree. The song seems to be pretty good. I don’t think dubbing it a Black National Anthem is a net positive. We shouldn’t call the Star Spangled Banner a White National Anthem.

Let’s have the NA and some patriotic songs. America the Beautiful, Lift Every Voice, etc. A shame people want to continue to divide us over this art.
