Pope Francis said Sunday he is “saddened” and worried that Roman Catholic Bishop Roland Álvarez was sentenced to 26 years in prison for speaking out against the Nicaraguan government.
Álvarez, 56, learned his fate from a Managua appeals court Friday after refusing to board a plane to the US with 222 other opponents of President Daniel Ortega. The bishop of Matagalpa was also stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship.

I’m surprised Frank didn’t excommunicate him for insurrection.
What do you mean by that? The Bishop was speaking against the Communist government.
why. h’s been supporting the communists all along. Wake Popey Head.
He shouldn’t be saddened, he should be outraged.
Francis is torn between his communist brothers in the Nicaraguan Government, and some Bishop people are expecting him to care about.
Isn’t Daniel Ortega significantly past his ‘best when used by’ date? Or did he ever have one?

Pope lifts suspension on Nicaraguan priest Fr. Ernesto Cardenal
Pope Francis has lifted sanctions on Fr. Ernesto Cardenal of Nicaragua.
The 94-year old priest was suspended from his priestly ministry and duties in 1984 by St. John Paul II because of his militancy and for being a minister in the government of Daniel Ortega.
A courageous pope would be on the next plane to Nicaragua.
A failed pope would simply issue a statement, then go back to lecturing us on political correctness.
I wouldn’t bet on Francis booking any flights to Nicaragua.
Ortega is rusty and old but he’s married to a younger woman who is his VP. She has something left in her and who knows may be driving the policy a bit herself.
The Pope is a commie too. He’s saddened that his bishop spoke out against communism.
He isn’t “his” bishop. A bishop who’s head of a local church doesn’t work for the pope, even if popes occasionally forget this.
Really? I thought the pope could excommunicate anyone he wants.
