Tech Layoffs Hit H1B Workers Hard
The Wall Street Journal ^ | February 10, 2023 | Te-Ping Chen

Posted on 02/10/2023 8:33:34 PM PST by KingofZion

When she lost her job at Google last month, Jingjing Tan started worrying about her dog, an energetic, 75-pound German shepherd.

As a foreign worker living in the U.S. on a temporary work visa, if she couldn’t find a job within 60 days, she feared she might have to return to her home country, China. In big Chinese cities, where tech jobs are, keeping large dogs as pets often isn’t allowed.

*** Layoffs have rippled across the tech industry, with more than 257,000 job cuts since last year.

*** While there is no reliable way to track how many workers on temporary visas have been laid off, those in the industry estimate that tens of thousands have been affected. Foreign-born workers, including green-card holders, naturalized citizens and those on temporary work visas, account for nearly one-quarter of all workers in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math, according to a 2019 estimate from the American Immigration Council, up from 16% in 2000.

If H1B workers can’t find new employment within a few weeks, or apply to transfer to another visa, they must leave the U.S. In other cases, immigration lawyers who specialize in employment law say, those laid off while traveling outside the U.S. now find themselves stuck outside of the country, with their work visa no longer valid for re-entry.

*** Companies aren’t allowed to consider national origin when determining whom to terminate, Ms. Alcorn says. “It’s at-will employment,” she says. “Anyone can quit, and anyone can be fired.”

I just stated in another post how we are reactive, and not proactive in our decisions. Especially with everyone involved.

The future is coming no matter what, we just don’t know what it is.

It’s a quick easy read.
We’ve become overly reactive and we spend too much time on miniscule issues while ignoring what is actually transpiring.
You are correct, folks still aren’t uncomfortable enough for change, complaining is easier and that’s why change feels forced on us. If we don’t pay attention, if we don’t have discussions and insist our political reps hear us, then other folks will make the change for us.
I hear you, my trust level is equal to yours.

Layoff all the over 55 white people first.

That is exactly what corporations do. They know there will be no effective retaliation from that group. At least not from those classified as Straight, White, Christian, Male. Members of other groups may present a more difficult problem.

Laws are interpreted very differently, depending on your membership in a protected class of people, and the current ranking of that class in "The Narrative" (tm).

This is not a system that can or should continue.

She might have to return to her home country, China.

Biden will send a limo to get her relocated and some cash and credit cards.

I assume that you did not return and shoot up the place.

I have worked at locations where management thought that was a real hazard when they dismissed people from a certain protected class. They instituted additional security procedures for several weeks afterwards.

Knowing the individuals involved, I was in general agreement with that assessment. In a small office, "everybody knows" if there is an unstable or dangerous individual on staff. Nobody wants to see the problem or admit that it exists. Nobody wants to confront the problem unless there is a face-saving way to usher that person out the door. It is probably for the best.

There were no follow-up incidents. The individuals affected went on to other jobs where they seemed to be doing quite well. Sometimes "a change will do you good".
