BAKHMUT, Ukraine — Surrounded on three sides, this eastern Ukrainian city has held out for months in bloody defiance against invading forces, Russian shells pounding day and night against streets coated with snow and rubble.
But, as the Kremlin’s troops advance here and threaten a major offensive across the war’s front lines, gunfire could be heard on a recent visit while the few thousand remaining locals sheltered in basements, stubbornly refusing to leave what remains of their homes.
"Bakhmut holds" is a patriotic battle-cry heard across the country, cementing the city as a symbol of national resistance.
And it still holds, for now.
'Death is not an option' The long-awaited spring offensive from Russia's military is expected in the coming weeks — if it hasn't already begun. Analysts have warned that Moscow's forces, pushing for a high-profile victory to coincide with the Feb. 24 anniversary of the invasion, could finally be on the brink of taking the city.
The people of Bakhmut are all too familiar with the most intense fighting of the war, with many living in shelters for as long as six months. Their resolve and determination holds firm.

Maybe you should make the best of it and get yourself one of those inexpensive Ukrainian internet brides now that all of the Ukrainian men are being slaughtered by NATO and 8 million Ukrainian refugees have flooded Europe. I’ve just finished “Poilu”, Louis Barthas, a memoir of a WWI French enlisted man in the trenches of 1914-18. A worms eye view. What’s is there is staggering, constant suffering and death.
But still they fought the boche. France certainly wasn’t better off while the war was on. And so it is with all wars.

I don’t understand you. I’m just pointing out that Ukraine is in a state of war, which comes with its well known sufferings. That doesn’t mean it has lost. Its state is much like France in 1916, or Vietnam in 1972.
I don’t see a horrific nuclear war in the offing, no more than it was in 1972 or 1951. Russia isn’t under an existential threat. All it needs to do is withdraw. There is no suicidal choice before it.

What I find interesting is reading the history of the Caucasus peoples - the Chechens (they call themselves the Vainakh). They have a history in that region going back to classical Greece (800 BC) or beyond.
They were primarily pagan until the 1700s - even as they absorbed some Christianity from Georgian (Kartvelie) missionaries.
They only pushed into Islam as a reaction to Russia invading and trying Russification tactics on them.
The same with the Circassians who were ethnically cleansed of the land they had lived in for millenia until pushed out in the 1800s by Russia
