Communiqués from the Ukrainian General Staff indicate that Russian forces are tightening their grip around Bakhmut. Enemy subunits are being held back on the north-western outskirts of the town (Krasna Hora, Paraskoviivka, Yahidne) and south of the Bakhmut-Kostiantynivka road, including on the western side of the Donets-Donbas canal (Predtechyne, Stupochky), which they have now crossed. The Russians are also expanding the area of their assault to the northwest of Soledar, where they have crossed the Bakhmut-Siversk road at Vasyukivka. The aggressor’s offensive is being contained south and east of Siversk, in the Avdiivka area, and in an arc west of Donetsk, where fighting for control of the city of Marinka continues. Clashes have also occurred in the Luhansk oblast, on the border with Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts; the fighting there is mainly taking place between Kreminna and Siversk.

Reports that fighting in the Zaporizhzhia oblast resumed in mid-January remain unconfirmed. According to the Ukrainian command, the enemy is conducting battle reconnaissance and trying to improve its tactical situation. Russian attacks on the defenders’ positions occur regularly, but they have been carried out in small groups, and no offensive actions on a larger scale have been reported. The regions of the nodal towns of Kamianske (on the River Dnieper, 30 km south of Zaporizhzhia), Orikhiv and Huliaipole have been indicated as the main targets of the Russian strike. The attackers have been making field advances south of these towns, most likely by seizing part of an earlier strip of no-man’s land.

I have found the ultra nationalist Ukrainian channels to be pretty useless. They say A will happen but B does. Too much propaganda to sift through. Constant chest thumping and delusions of grandeur. If they say A, expect B.

It was, they were protecting the ethnic Russian provinces that the Ukies have been shelling since 2014.

Look at a topographic map: the Ukrainians are holding the high ground on the north and south sides of Bakhmut. The southern road lies in the valley behind the canal or small river, so it's not surprising the Russians have crossed it. The main road is still available, though of course subject to some Russian artillery.

The Russians will have a very hard time dislodging the Ukrainians from the high ground, but if they begin doing so the Ukrainians will simply withdraw slowly from Bakhmut. The Ukrainian goal is simply to hold on and inflict as many casualties as possible before falling back to a new set of fortified positions behind them. Despite the addition of Russian troops from the callup the advances are at a walking pace. The fighting will follow more or less the same pattern as last summer's offensive, only with much higher losses for the Russian side.

The Russian goal is simply to push the Ukrainians out of the last parts of Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts and then try to force Ukraine to recognize the annexations of the territories occupied since last year, which the Ukrainians will probably refuse. When the offensive crawls to halt, the Ukrainians should have received much of the additional armor already promised, longer range artillery and possibly some combat aircraft as well.

This started with the Obama/Biden/Nuland support of the putsch in Kiev and violent overthrow (with snipers) of the Ukrainian govt. in 2014, if not earlier. The US tried to use Ukraine as an anti-Russian base & it is proving fatal for Ukrainian statehood.

This is a NATO war that the USA gave full support for.

It is a major component of the NWO. The Russians are claiming that NATO and the USA lied about the purpose of the Ukraine.

Germany’s own Merkel backed up the claim. NATO and the USA forced Russia’s hand.

It is what it is. The USA has no reason to be there outside of their ambition of the NWO.

The capture of Bakhmut pretty much sets the stage for the complete liberation of the Donbass.

The only question now is how far east Russia will need to go to create enough of a buffer to keep Donbass and Crimea safe from terrorist attacks. I can imagine that being a difficult decision for Russia since, as they go further west, the people get less and less friendly towards them.
