A New York middle school is apologizing after serving students with a meal on the first day of Black History Month that was deemed to be culturally insensitive. Administrators at Nyack Middle School say that the hot lunch menu was changed by the vendor without their knowledge on February 1st, the first day of Black History Month, to include chicken and waffles with a watermelon dessert which the school’s principal called an "unfortunate situation", The Journal News reported.

Nyack is essentially upper middle class Uber liberal whites with a sizeable poor Hispanic minority as well as some poor Caribbean blacks.
Chicken and waffles have become as trendy as avocado toast was a few years ago - my millennial cousin and laws are serving at their wedding (yuck).

Why not go all the way? serve collard greens, fried chicken and watermelon, with complimentary menthol cigarettes with a shot of malt liquor!
A meal cannot be racially insensitive. A meal is food. Food is not a human. Only humans can be racially insensitive.
And if they were served tea and crumpets, with some foie gras and diced fennel with sauce bearnaise they would complain that the food was culturally inappropriate.
The more you give them the more they hate you.

That is not true for all school lunches. Sometimes the meatloaf was soggy and the veggies were grey.

Maybe they should have taken requests prior to deciding on the menu. Then those same foods might have been fine.
Taught Geography in 7th grade. Near the end of the year we had an international Day. Kids brought a dish representing their family. Had everything from Borscht to Mac &Cheese. Really fun day for the kids as they tried a variety of foods.
We have become a nation of jellyfish and are giving up our freedom in the process.
