At the very least if the Chinese were actually launching “weather balloons” (beyond dubious) they should have informed any countries that such a large and dangerous payload might potentially drift over their territory, and agree with the “host” country about how such an incident would be handled in the future. We should launch a barrage of “weather balloons” from a favorable site, say Kazakhstan, and see how they react.

I notice the baloon was shot down after it had completed it’s mission.

You assume you know the mission. I suggest you do not.

I assumed it had a mission. It was shot down as it left the US.

Theater on two fronts:

1) If not for civilians spotting the spy balloon and making it national news, the Biden admin. would’ve said and done nothing, knowing full well it was up there from the beginning. And no one would’ve known about it. So shooting it down was for public consumption, not to eliminate a national security threat.

2) China knew the admin had to shoot it down after the outcry here, so their statement was for public (and world) consumption in an attempt to keep them from looking weak. General Milley probably called his Chicom comrades, apologized for all the trouble, and told them what we’d be doing and that there’s no hard feelings.

They will NEVER admit what they did was wrong

From their perspective it was the right thing to do; and, there were no repercussions.

We never apologized for sending reconnaissance planes over Russia, and it was also the right thing to do.

It is all spying with a dash of political theater. It has been going on in one form or another since the dawn of time.

The Chinese probably learned what they already saw on USGS maps.

It is my understanding that there was a large flotilla of US warships waiting in the shoot-down zone.

Noticeably, the balloon, regardless of the mission, was shot down only after it had completely crossed the continent of North America, primarily the the United States, traveling at high altitude in the general direction of west to east.

This balloon territorial transgression should have been immediately swatted away as the gnat that is was. It should be SOP not needing any management intervention.

Given the amount of hoopla generated, I could find no map tracking the balloon as it traversed west to east and north to south. The baloon was seemingly tracking the polar air mass that produced intense cold in the USA.

Who knows.
The Chinks were trying to make the point that we are weak.

And they succeeded.

Look at the response of the shoot down. It was a rather weak response from them. They are laughing because they did not expect this thing to get ALL ACROSS the USA.
Usually they huff and puff and all that.

They now know that this mental midget we have in office is scared of them and can be bought off.

Pig Face Biden is a national security threat.

End of story.

We need to recognize China as a national security threat and stop all commerce with China and end all visas and work permits for Chinese citizens.

Maybe we should bring home all necessary manufacturing operations first. Then I'm good with this.

How many countries have shot down a satellite? One. Who? Us. When? About 40 years ago.

Since you addressed the comment to me, I will offer this:

The US Navy intercepted and destroyed a malfunctioning spy satellite with a SM-3, in 2008.

AFAIK that is the only one for the US.

Russia and China have respectively destroyed orbiting satellites as well.

How many countries have shot down a satellite? One.

Incorrect. The list includes USSR, Russia, PRC, and USA.

When? About 40 years ago.

Catastrophically inaccurate. India successfully tested an ASAT in 2019.
