The U-2 is still in use. But any aircraft would be vulnerable to modern A2A missiles or SAMs. As are low-earth spy satellites.
If it re-entered U.S. territory over north Idaho then it drifted almost right over top of my location. I’ll let you know if people or animals start showing any odd symptoms in this region which has some farms and ranches amidst the forested terrain. There are two towns in this region that would have been under the track for certain.
I am keeping an open mind on what this odd occurrence actually means. I suppose there’s some chance it was just a stray participant from some purely scientific research being done over China (I know it’s too big to be a regular weather balloon). Anything that did stray from China would normally end up over North America if it reached jet stream altitude.
Now here’s an odd thing, we know some avid birders (not one myself) and they were telling us a few weeks ago that some rare migrant bird from east Asia had shown up in a bird survey in southern BC last month. And somebody else said this was not a lone occurrence, that these stray birds not native to our region sometimes do show up here. Combined with the balloon it made me think of those stories about birds or robot birds acting as spies for Israel in Lebanon.
So this could have a connection, or be related to something else that is expelled from the balloon and allowed to drift down to earth here. For what purpose, one might ask? I don’t buy the concept of this being a surveillance balloon, you can get better quality spy data from satellites. Also it was not necessarily under control and even at that height would most likely be out of range of useful surveillance targets. Then also, it’s quite often cloudy in this region at this time of year. You couldn’t count on clear skies in Montana or South Dakota in early February.
Maybe we will have more info eventually although from where, I don’t know, as nobody trusts the U.S. or Canadian governments to tell the truth about anything.
