President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed Friday that Ukrainians will fight “for as long as we can” to hold the key eastern city of Bakhmut, as Moscow ramps up pressure in the eastern region of Ukraine.
“Nobody will give away Bakhmut,” Zelensky said during a meeting with European Union leaders. “We will fight for as long as we can. We consider Bakhmut our fortress.”
“If weapon (supplies) are accelerated, specifically long-range weapons, not only will we not abandon Bakhmut but we will also begin to remove the occupiers from the Donbas, which was occupied since 2014,” he president added.
Moscow says its troops are encircling Bakhmut from several directions and fighting to take control of a road that is a crucial supply route for Ukrainian forces.

Somebody here last night claimed that Bahkmut is already surrounded and its garrison was trapped. Would not listen to reason, which is a problem with most FReepers who have let their emotions on the topic get the better of them.
Hard to say which Russia v the Ukraine clique is worse about that.
Yep. I support Ukraine but it's a stupid tactical move that Zelensky is keeping his troops in Bakhmut. General George Washington would have withdrawn his troops by now. Sometimes you have to know when to retreat so you can fight on a place of your choosing.
“for as long as we can”
Sounds like an admission of defeat.
Elensky is blowing smoke up our a**es, everyone including our own military is publicly acknowledging this battle is over. No, Ukies didn’t ‘win’. This is just more of the same snow job to squeeze out even more $$ and weapons [which is $$ too, but for the arms industry for replacement stock]. Statement was probly under WH orders.
Sounds like an admission of defeat.

The US was defeated when they announced for all the world to hear they will fight down “ to the last Ukrainian “….I bet the Ukrainians are not to pleased…
Evidence is massive depopulation, 15 million/39 million left their country…not counting the dead.
“We”. Lol. “We” aren’t fighting. More likely “we” have an escape plan.
The idiot. It’s a Russian roach motel designed to attract Uke military in for killing wholesale. And they are falling for it hard.
What your said in #3 is quite correct, as I see it but didn’t know how to say it.
“The idiot. It’s a Russian roach motel designed to attract Uke military in for killing wholesale. And they are falling for it hard.”
You have it backwards. It’s a killbox for Russians and UKR is maximizing it’s effectiveness.
Oh whatever. That must be why the Russians have the Ukes fully or almost completely surrounded depending who you listen to.
Doesn’t bother me. I hope Z stays there to the bitter end.
Apparently, the Americans have been telling Zelenksy to pull his troops out of Bakhmut but he refuses to listen.
He is condemning men to the slaughter in a hopeless battle…for what reason?
Nationalist ideology?
Because he is another il Duce?
Very good visual depiction. Fact is, 70 percent of the worlds population ( China, India, Sauds, Turkey, ME, Brics ) are buying Russian products, fuel, energy, NG, grain, fertilizer, metals, commodities, etc…Vlad is filling his coffers while the collective West is bankrupt.
The war cheerleaders can thank their brain dead leader Biden.
Certain Ukrainians will happily follow him.....
———
Not many left in Ukraine, 15 million have left Ukraine, the 18-60 year olds that have not fled ( estimates are 3 million) are being sent into Vlad’s nest grinder.
Much international commentary questioning who will be left to rebuild the beggar nation?…woman, children, think post war Nazi Getmany.
Most of us will probably flee if we had to make that choice. Its better than dying in the trenches.
