PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Public Schools has announced a hiring freeze, claiming it's because of shrinking enrollment and uncertain funding.
In a letter sent to parents on Tuesday, the district says they have 3,000 fewer students enrolled now than they did before the start of the pandemic
PPS also said they expect to lose around another 500 students next year.
The district stated that pandemic relief funds have started drying up and that they have not received a strong indication of adequate funding from the state.
The hiring freeze will start in the central office, where they will also sweep unused central office funds and evaluate how to operate with minimal central infrastructure.
Meanwhile, PPS intends to prioritize direct student services and teaching in its budget decisions. It also promised every school at the K-8 level will have a coach to support teachers.

Sucks to be them.
During earthquakes in Southern California, they people back
east always see the worst of the damage over and over.
Everyone back there thinks it’s total destruction. It never
is.
Not sure if the same thing is going on in Portland in loose
terms, but it sure hasn’t looked good over the last few
years from here.
It couldn’t jave anything to do with CRT and white shaming.
It must be climate change.
...They could move or get a better paying job...
That’s what they used to tell private sector workers. Paybacks are a Biotch...
I live in Texas now. Might even buy a horse;-)
Yeah, much better than Portland. And your horses won’t riot.
Graying population. No longer safe, and managed by mad people.
Yeah, good luck.
I’m sure the declining public school enrollment has nothing to do with the desire of decent parents opting either for homeschooling or, better yet, getting the #### outta that God-forsaken city before the fire and brimstone starts raining down on it.

Portland still has a long way to go until it shrinks to a sustainable size.
