I mean is this stupid balloon going to compromise our nuclear deterrent? Perhaps it will catch our troop movements in Montana? Or maybe it was a drunken bet by some ChiComs that they could send a balloon over, get a few pics (which they could already do) and cause people to freak out like it’s War of the Worlds Part II. At least the Neocons are happy. This gives them something shiny and new to play with.
Other than shooting it down, of course. It's at about 120,000' altitude, which would narrow down the options for that also, one would think, but certainly the USAF has some kinda missile that could destroy it.
There are geosynchronous satellites, semi synchronous satellites, as well as, redundant LEO satellites.

They probably could fly an aircraft overhead and try to snag/hook it safely that way. Which could pose as much of a risk to civilians on the ground if there is dangerous cargo as shooting directly.

The balloon you refer to sarcastically as "dastardly" is foreign. It's payload is foreign. How many should be floating around? Zero is the appropriate answer. Not "oh we all spy on each other, big deal".
Its payload furthermore is quite large.
It is my understanding they are jamming it up.
AND based on other information there are about #x as many fight jets up today than usual.

Even as authoritarian as the CCP is, it knows that if it allowed a US surveillance device to hover placidly above Chinese land with all the world aware of it, Chinese would overthrow the government within hours.

The balloon is at the mercy of the winds so as a spy platform it is next to worthless. Existing satellite technology, the Chinese probably stole from us, would provide as good data and be more precisely targeted. Consider however, this ballon would be an ideal platform for distribution of bioweapons or even a small EMP device. The balloon is in our airspace without permission and we would have every right to shoot it down and examine its contents.
