Firepower has been crucial in Russia’s gains in the war, but Ukrainian fighters and analysts say that Moscow has relied increasingly on a more crude tactic as its forces try to take the eastern city of Bakhmut: the sheer weight of troop numbers.
Russian casualties in recent fighting in Bakhmut have been higher than in previous months as commanders have poured soldiers into the battle, the Ukrainians said.
The Kremlin is aiming for a significant victory after suffering battlefield setbacks in the south and northeast last fall and as both sides prepare for offensives in the coming weeks or months. Part of Russia’s evolving strategy, Ukrainian officials said, appears to be to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses with waves of soldiers.
That would be a departure from Russia’s summer campaigns for Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk in Luhansk Province, in which artillery pounded the cities for weeks before Russia launched a sustained ground offensive.
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia called up 300,000 reservists in September, boosting the army’s strength, even if the new soldiers are relatively inexperienced. Several Ukrainian fighters told reporters from The New York Times that while Kyiv’s forces appeared to be better trained, they were at times overwhelmed by the numbers ranged against them. It was not possible to confirm that independently, and the Russian authorities have not laid out specifically how they deploy their forces, or spoken of how many casualties they are willing to tolerate.

Really whole part of town up to a run divided town on east are under Russian control. Also town is in embrace from south and north. Also all 3 road to town under artillery’s control.
Boy is that map different from today’s. Today the Russians have finally cut Ukraines final resupply route. Any retreat or improbable resupply would suffer from indirect fire.

The Wagners and Donbass militias are a top notch fighting force using drones to pinpoint weak spots in the Ukraine lines, then directing Russian artillery to target the weakness, followed on by infantry advances and flanking maneuvers.
By contrast the AFU side lacks sophisticated communications between units under attack, are over-matched in artillery, cannot fight effectively at night, and there is no troop rotation.
Anyone who gives a flip about the people of Ukraine should be demanding Zelenski end the slaughter and negotiate an honorable settlement.
This has been a standard Russian tactic for hundreds of years. In the Russian mindset lives are cheap. So, massed formations of human locusts, destroying everything in front of them (which is how Russia itself has described such formations in past wars) seems their preferred modus operandi.

Why is going into battle with superior numbers a “crude tactic” when Russia does it? I don’t remember the consensus media using that term when America poured superior members into Panama, Grenada or Kuwait.
The Russians are a funny bunch aren’t they? They invade someone else’s country, get their butts kicked, and then they blame the country they invaded for their own casualties.
So like I said I hope the Russians brought body bags for this new offensive of theirs. Because they need to take their dead soldiers home instead of leaving them to occupy Ukrainian soil.
