Utility companies in the U.S. have disconnected customers an estimated 5.7 million times since 2020, according to a new report.
The disconnections have come even as those companies have paid billions to shareholders and executives, according to a report published on Monday by the Center for Biological Diversity, BailoutWatch and the Energy and Policy Institute.
“No one should ever have to choose between having food on the table and keeping the heat on,” Selah Goodson Bell, a campaigner with the Center for Biological Diversity’s energy justice program, said in a statement.
“It’s inexcusable for utility executives and shareholders to profit while Americans suffer climate extremes and get punished for being poor,” he added.
Fossil fuel market upheaval and extreme weather drove electric and gas disconnections to new heights in 2022, the advocacy groups found.

Biological diversity?? Please. Says it all right there.
State Public Utility Commissions have total control over shutoff policy.
Blaming the utilities themselves is laughable.

Well then. If that title doesn’t convince you nothing will.
when ordinary folks talk about “corporate officers and shareholders making a profit ...”, they really don’t understand that the corporate officerz answer to the shareholders on matts of the business’s finances.
‘sharreholders’ own ‘pieces’ of the business in ‘stock shares’, bought and sold on ‘the stock market’.
if ‘the business’ makes ‘money’ , their 1st order of business is paying the shareholders’, and the 2nd, pay the bills. THEN it can count the profit.
those who look at the shareholders as part of any problem, they are blaming their own family members, due to the method of managing retirement accounts who use mutual funds.
Socialism/Communism can only exist as a parasite of capitalism.
Everything socialists/Communists wish to "redistribute" is produced by capitalism.
Things don't just magically appear because you need them.
They were paid money to stay home. They chose to spend that money on things other than bills.
If only some idiot had let the newly discovered oil get to the refineries in the Mississippi Delta. But no, that idiot killed the Keystone Pipeline, reduced federal lands that can be drilled, told the EPA to drag its heels on issuing all kinds of oil permits, and otherwise penalize the distillate fuel, natural gas, and coal industries. All to placate the Greenie Vote plus help a big contributor to his Presidential campaign who just happens to own the only rail line that services the Keystone and nearby oil reserves. (Hint: Warren Buffet)
Also, compare our power plant construction plans to the rest of the world. We're almost dead last. Yet, you liberals are going to ban oil-based cars in CA by 2035 but you don't have enough power now for current needs, let alone the crush if everyone has to use electric cars.
Wind and solar? Good luck finding enough rare earth materials to make enough batteries to fulfill energy demands on cloudy, windless days. You twits haven't thought this through.
Over a similar non-covid period how many households have the power shut off? (No, I didn’t read the article because it just pisses me off.) Also, during that period half of my renters left. All due to drug issues. Their power was cut off. Although money was involved none of them had issues paying the rent until they started getting helicopter money from government, so suddenly they had money to “dispose of.”
So, if you want to see people developing drug issues, just give them free stuff they’d otherwise have to budget for. Because if they have ten extra bucks, they’re going to buy drugs. (My list includes a 36-year-old single mother and a 74-year-old who was doing fine until she had an extra eight grand buring a hole in her pocket.)
There’s no reason to be sensible and look into details.
This is the fault of greedy white men.
QED
Sure, they should. How many of them had their hair and nails done? How many had their smokes and/or dope? How many had their beer/wine/liquor? How many had a $1,000 cell phone with the fancy plan? It's all priorities.
Power shut off? How did they charge their electric vehicles?
Although there were news reports that climate change problems were lower because lockdowns alleviated human activities.
