Until it decided to confront Moscow with an existential military threat in Ukraine, Washington confined the use of American military power to conflicts that Americans could afford to lose, wars with weak opponents in the developing world from Saigon to Baghdad that did not present an existential threat to U.S. forces or American territory. This time—a proxy war with Russia—is different.
Contrary to early Beltway hopes and expectations, Russia neither collapsed internally nor capitulated to the collective West’s demands for regime change in Moscow. Washington underestimated Russia’s societal cohesion, its latent military potential, and its relative immunity to Western economic sanctions.
As a result, Washington’s proxy war against Russia is failing. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was unusually candid about the situation in Ukraine when he told the allies in Germany at Ramstein Air Base on January 20, “We have a window of opportunity here, between now and the spring,” admitting, “That’s not a long time.”
Alexei Arestovich, President Zelensky’s recently fired advisor and unofficial “Spinmeister,” was more direct. He expressed his own doubts that Ukraine can win its war with Russia and he now questions whether Ukraine will even survive the war. Ukrainian losses—at least 150,000 dead including 35,000 missing in action and presumed dead—have fatally weakened Ukrainian forces resulting in a fragile Ukrainian defensive posture that will likely shatter under the crushing weight of attacking Russian forces in the next few weeks.
Ukraine’s materiel losses are equally severe. These include thousands of tanks and armored infantry fighting vehicles, artillery systems, air defense platforms, and weapons of all calibers. These totals include the equivalent of seven years of Javelin missile production.

About a week after the Invasion, while shopping at a "big box" hardware store, I was approached by a middle-aged Ukrainian woman who had somehow recognized that I am an American (maybe she overheard me conversing with my wife) who took my hand and, in a pitiful, weepy voice, expressed her thanks for U.S. support (which, at that time, was still only moral).
In later months, we entertained Ukrainian refugees at our home and helped organize aid packages. And my wife (who speaks Russian fluently) is now giving German lessons to Ukrainian refugees.
We have yet to meet and talk with a single Ukrainian who wasn't outraged at Putin's unprovoked attack/invasion.
This is admittedly all anecdotal evidence - but the actual evidence of my eyes is that the Ukrainian people stand with Zelenskyy and have nothing but contempt and hatred for Putin.
Regards,
All NATO has to do is say that Ukraine will not now or in the future be admitted to the organization. Problem solved. This is not America’s war and I will not fight if called upon.
Do you have fun foaming at the mouth?
Like a dying Russian soldier.
Hard words to shock and then drive a point home. Canuck_Cuckservative is an agitator from a rump state of the American Empire encouraging the American crocodile to eat others before maple-flavored Canada.
The Forever War must be fed and if we lose the Ukraine War its attentions may be focused on countries much closer to home due to diminished reach; frustration, and anger.
So-called "Whataboutism."
Regards,
Really, you speak for Putin now?
Because you don’t know that before he invaded, Putin demanded that NATO withdraw from about a dozen member nations.
So no that wouldn’t end the war.
Bump.
As a vet I do NOT support my pants-$**ting POTUS or government in a dirty war to protect their NWO dealings.
In fact, the jaundiced war-goons who got us here need to be dragged behind carts for what they’ve done... and I am not kidding.
Thanks for the weepy anecdotes. Now tell me an equally big lie like the illegal alien invasion of America is an “act of love.”
Oh another “we are racist for defending Ukraine” Freeper.
Soon they will join the Communist party, they are so far left.
The West never accepted the Chinese occupation of Tibet. We were in no position to defend it militarily.
That isn’t hard talk, it is childish gibberish, adults don’t want to wade through something like that to try and figure out what the person is trying to say with the flushed face, spitting, and incoherent ranting.
Russia would walk right through nato in a couple of months. Nato is not another Slavic Orthodox Christian nation that Russians need to worry about the health or safety of.
Yeah you figured it out, we’re going to invade Canada because Russia invaded Ukraine.
Are you people crazy or just pretend at it?
Our criminal class is sending our tax dollars to be laundered in the ukraine and deposited into their private accounts
You are a very sick individual who is easily influenced by nonsense. When you look around and you are on the same side as a bunch of leftists who hate the USA it ought to make you stop and think.
Zelensky support among the Ukrainian people is around 90%. Understandable, since they have seen Russians robbing, raping and executing civilians and leveling towns and cities.
It couldn’t be any more obvious that the Ukrainians are devoted to fighting Russia.
Because, duh, they would have lost in a few weeks otherwise.
The keyboard warriors attacking Ukraine with their Ipads on here are the ones who would never fight for their country. They are frauds.
BS, Balderdascious drivel.
Russia has lost militarily with forces that are shown to just be plain incompetent. The Russian economy is shown to be a facade for the western companies that created it. When they left, the Russians remaining don’t have the wherewithal to keep it running, much less return it to where it was.
You do understand that the bulk of aid is weaponry sent to Ukraine?
If the Ukrainians got their hands on the dopes here who claim they care so much that they want Russia to win, it wouldn’t be pretty.
The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives and their country. They’d probably shoot these dopes after listening to about 3 sentences of pro Russian propaganda.
No. What I am saying is that an America that has been humbled and humiliated in Europe will be looking to kick a dog closer to home and Canada. May. Be. It.
