The Memphis Police Department Saturday announced that it has "permanently deactivated" its SCORPION unit, one day after the release of shocking video which showed the violent arrest of Tyre Nichols earlier this month. All five former officers involved in Nichols' arrest, who have since been charged with second-degree murder in his death, were part of that unit.
The decision came after Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis met with members of the unit Saturday "to discuss the path forward for the department and the community in the aftermath of the tragic death of Tyre Nichols," police said in a statement.
Officials came to the conclusion that it was "in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit," the statement read.
SCORPION officers agreed "unreservedly" with the decision, the department added.
The SCORPION unit had been inactive since the Jan. 7 arrest of Nichols, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland had said in a news bulletin Friday.
SCORPION, or Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, included more than two dozen officers tasked with taking on street crime. They wore black hoodies and tactical black vests with "POLICE" emblazoned across the front and back, and drove dark colored Dodge Chargers marked with a SCORPION seal.
They patrolled in groups and at times used low-level traffic stops as a way to find violent criminals, drugs or weapons, according to the department.
"While the heinous actions of a few casts a cloud of dishonor on the title SCORPION, it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing process for all impacted," Saturday's statement read.

“every move needs oversight preventing things from getting out of control”
Yeah—I don’t think there is anyone who thinks Memphis police senior management was capable of effective oversight of anything.
A female police chief sends a strong signal that the Department is political and does not reward merit and experience on the street.
She had already disqualified herself from any position of leadership. Or any position in law enforcement for that matter.
There is no way that a woman who has helped try to protect and aid pedophiles will ever earn the respect of anyone man who truly wants to serve and protect society.
Who says it was based on information they received vs what he was doing behind the wheel before he stopped? Yes, they would have run priors and found none before the stop, but I have not heard there was any BOLO for the vehicle he was in either.
The reason for pulling him over could’ve been for a minor traffic offense, which is common in the hunt for punks, but if he sped away when they turned the lights on, that’d make it a bit more different context for the initial yank out of the car.
The history of the unit itself seems to be more like the stop and frisk procedures of NY so would not be surprised if there were no traffic violation at all to initiate the stop. I would also believe that the procedure for any stop initiated by a BOLO would involve the yank.
What I don’t buy at this point is that they’d do the yank for non felony detainments.
That’s why I’d like to see the dashcams. The only reason not to release them is either stupidity or the desire to craft a story.
I’m not doubting the plan, but DeQuarious Jenkins won’t be patrolling the Appalachian Mountains.
So I guess your stringing together a sequence of speculations is supposed to pass for critical thinking, lol.
Or they could be democrats. It’s their favorite narrative. A Democrat congressman’s knee jerk reaction a couple days ago was to blame it on white supremacy. Then he deleted his tweet.
I don’t understand why they would set up a group of cops as “gang” police. Give them souped up Dodge Chargers with a scorpion logo on them, not make them wear full police uniforms and then expect these men to police the same as a traffic cop and follow the same rules. Setting this group aside from other cops and giving them bigger latitude to act independently is just making them feel and act “special”.
While the media can’t get enough of this story, very little interest in Paul Pelosi and friend.
I watch judge judy.
She has a saying, “If it doesn’t make sense, then it isn’t true”.
99 percent of the time this applies.
So, I am trying to make sense of a senseless act.
Once something makes some sort of sense, then you can start to look for cause and effect.
So far, this is the only thing I can find that makes sense.
This unit apprehends bad guys in their cars.
This makes sense.
Somehow, the victim was caught up in this.
This does not make sense. Running the guys plate and record would have led them not to make the stop.
The only thing that makes sense is that they had “other” information.
So, yes, this is critical thinking.
The Scorpion Five were nothing but an out of control group of gangsters within the Memphis police department...they thought their bodycam footage would be destroyed by their handlers. Who was their direct supervisor who allowed this Memphis Police Gang of executioners to terrorize the streets of Memphis?
Just another black gang wearing police uniforms.......I hope their charges are elevated to 1st degree murder, and that the while chain of command is charged with 2nd degree murder.
Shutting down the Scorpion units is a cover up.
Magnum Force?
It would be good to see statistics on if the unit helped to lower crime.
No, that’s speculation. It still could be they had no information and pulled him over for simply driving around at night in a problem neighborhood and were grade-a nazis about it.
But it could also be the guy sped off, thereby escalating the situation and they acted like most cops would with a suspect that wasn’t allowing himself to be detained or cuffed when out of the car.
And, of course, it could be what you said.
All of that is speculation.
Recognizing that releasing the dashcam videos would go a long way to answering those obvious questions would be critical thinking.
Guessing at reasons why they weren’t released is further speculation.
Magnum Force?>>>>>>>>>
Magnum Farce.........
Who gave these 5 cops a license to kill?
How many more of these idiots do we have ?
Are they ex CIA operatives who went insane, or are they former members of Obama’s Choom Gang wet squad?
HOw could men like this even BE police officers?
The federalization of city police forces made a huge advance here, served up by creating black gangsters in police uniforms....was an FBI counter espionage team involved?
Speculation IS critical thinking.
Being a cop hater is not.
No, critical thinking is identifying inconsistencies, errors, and gaps in a story. The gaps are where important context changing information is missing.
Attempting to fill in those gaps with detail unsupported by known facts is speculation.
These words will become more clear by the end of immersive language training.
Bottom line........ resisting arrest is a criminal activity.
Those who resist forfeit rights as they endanger police and violate the cops civil rights
I agree.
