CVS Health Corp. and Walmart Inc. are cutting pharmacy hours in the midst of a pharmacist shortage that has plagued the nation’s biggest drugstore chains throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
CVS, the largest U.S. drugstore chain by revenue, plans in March to cut or shift hours at about two-thirds of its roughly 9,000 U.S. locations. Walmart plans to reduce pharmacy hours by closing at 7 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. at most of its roughly 4,600 stores by March.
Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. previously said it was operating thousands of stores on reduced hours because of staffing shortages. Combined, the three chains operate some 24,000 retail pharmacies across the U.S.

Retail pharmacies, which benefited from a bump in sales and profits during the pandemic, are now reworking their business models as demand for Covid tests and vaccines decline and generic-drug sales generate smaller profits.

I can only imagine how hard it is to staff stores that are located on every corner in America.
Our vet recently announced a significant cut back in hours.

Lawlessness breeds rampant crime, hundreds of stores close. Next up - the race baiters screaming “Store deserts” where the crime is the highest.
Pretty soon, we’ll have to buy all of our soap, deodorant, and shampoo on Amazon. Then all we have to do is keep the porch pirates at bay.
Are they only hiring the vaxxed?
Our vet's issue the past year or so is getting the pet vaccines he prefers. Supply is limited, particularly for the 3-year rabies vaccine he prefers for cats. Has had no reaction issues with it, but it's hard to find. When push comes to shove and the 3-year timeline is up, he's been stuck using the 1-year vaccine, which he has seen cause various reactions in some cats. Our cats are due next month. Sigh.
Our closest CVS, in Bozeman, MT, sent a crew over from Billings and housed them in a hotel while they were short staffed. Drive-thru pharmacy was closed and the inside pharmacy hours were reduced. Thing have gotten better - but not back to where it used to be.
Do your cats go outside? Ours are indoor, and getting old, so we are ignoring vaccines.
I can't remember the last time I saw an "AMERICAN" pharmacist at my CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens.

Same problem here in rural Indiana. They have closed some stores and that sent customers to the next nearest small town pharmacy. Now that store has an onslaught and they are unable to fill the need. Most of the time the drive up is closed and that is bad because customers all pool up and the back of the store spreading around sickness.
No. Strictly indoor only. And yeah, they're getting older (16, 15, and 11). But I think Central Texas communities are pretty adamant about keeping the rabies vaccines up to date. Which is why our new vet (since Fall of 2018) prefers the 3-year version he's seen no adverse reaction with for years.
I imagine that’s part of the problem. CVS pushed hard for the clotshot and I was constantly getting texts on that and shingles, flu shot and whatever the Flavor of the Month was.
I quit going to CVS entirely when they got rid of their human tellers and put in automated ones — so I can do the work of the supposed CVS company.
BS to that.
This is the sort of behavior that drives even someone like me to buy more and more stuff online — local retailers are run by idiots.
We have a relative who was a pharmacist—she got caught on camera four times in two different states getting high on their supply—oxy.
Eventually she was banned from the profession.
A search on the topic suggests this issue is widespread.
I’ve learned to call ahead if heading to the pharmacy. They change the hours so often that you can’t depend on them being open even during normal business hours. Pharmacies that never previously closed for lunch now do so since they are not sufficiently staffed to have a full crew on duty while the others are eating.
Pharmacies now just have one check-out clerk so you have lines forming eight to 10 or more deep with people coughing and sneezing, or obviously in pain, and crying babies, etc.
Society as a whole is collapsing as our quality of living is quickly regressing while the media tells us everything is totally awesome!

The reasons they cannot adequately staff their pharmacies is the all three outlets mentioned are horrible places to work.

Or white males. I was told that at the local college, Asian females monopolized the pharmacy classes.
However, pharmacists will soon lose their jobs to robots.
