PETER HITCHENS: Sending Ukraine our tanks could turn Europe into one big radioactive graveyard
DailyMail.com ^ | 1/21/2023 | Peter Hitchens

This was the moment at which we began the unstoppable descent into terrible danger which so many of us will bitterly regret in times to come.

I won't waste time here going over the question of who started the Ukraine war, or even why. Most people don't want to know and refuse to think about it, or look up the facts. They defame and abuse anyone who tries to tell them. So to hell with that. I'm bored with trying.

The Government claims to be in favour of free debate in universities, so all the stage army of "Right-wing" thinkers and scribblers whoop with admiration that we can now perhaps discuss the transgender issue. Well and good.

But the Government and its tame thinkers are not in favour of free debate on crucial national policy...

When the Defence Secretary announced that British tanks were going to Ukraine, not one MP raised any doubts or opposed the move. Not one. To read the record of the non-debate is like reading the proceedings of some Communist fake parliament...

What we have just decided to do is to prolong and deepen the war. Maybe Ukraine's new tanks will sweep all before them. Maybe they will bog down. Maybe they will try to take Crimea. Maybe they will soon be taking part in a Victory Parade on Red Square. I don't know. But if they cross into what Russia regards at its own territory, then do not be surprised by anything which happens...

But why is Britain in this affair? I know that a lot of voters in key states in America hate Russia because their forebearers came from lands Moscow had oppressed. I know that some neo-conservative fanatics in Washington have long desired to dismantle Russia and ensure that is never an important...

Not only that, it takes very well trained crews to operate the sophisticated weapons in those tanks and that training takes years.

This conflict is designed to bleed the Western countries of weapons they cannot easily and quickly afford to replace by wasting them in Ukraine

China and whoever else wants to start a regional conflict while Western nations grind their military stores to dust is the big winner here

As such, this is very destabilizing to peaceful coexistence

The tanks and APC are for one thing. The Ukrainians believe that they will need them to regain their sovereign territory. Russia will not negotiate to leave Ukraine, has not and will not honor three prior treaties on Ukraine Russian borders. They will have to be forcibly evicted. They threaten nuclear war if they are invaded. I doubt Ukraine will cross beyond its borders, and I doubt they will stop fighting until they have regained them.

The Russians have a GDP similar to California. They have much old equipment, but they can’t supply supplies, uniforms, or even modern rifles to combatants anymore. This is a stupid war, wherein the prizes for all involved will be stupid. The best way to end it, is for everyone to return to their respective borders. Russian sovereignty and security is not at risk, because most of Europe won’t fund militaries and Americans grow weary of protecting them.

My guess is he is of the opinion that a case can be made that the west and Ukraine provoked the war but I’m guessing. I am not paying attention much to this due to the fact the corruption within the USA government, deep state and the west is the elephant no one wants to address. Not here at FR but in general in the real world.

Russian success will put Putin next to Poland, and after that its Germany. Poland warned about this for years.

Look at the map. Russia is already next to Poland. Plus its puppet Belarus gives them a very long indefensible border.

Just curious about something. How does all this military hardware get to Ukraine without Russia preventing it? Why would Russia allow arms intended to kill their own troops through? It would be like Israel letting Iran land at a port in Gaza and offload weapons intended for the PLO to use against Israeli citizens.

That’s why none of this makes sense to me. A simple, “If you are shipping arms to Ukraine, we will do everything in our power to prevent this from happening” statement from Russia would end this war tomorrow.

Why do we allow Iran to ship lots of drones to Russia to use against Ukraine?

Supposedly our admin is supporting Ukraine, yet we do nothing about Iran shipping weapons to Russia?

Parts of the Ukraine were part of Russia for over 240 years. It is a Slavic Civil War we have no business being in.

“Well I guess according to your logic Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenian shouldn’t exist as independent, free countries.”

Q: How many tanks did NATO send to Georgia during the Russian/Georgian war in 2008?
A: zero

Let these former Soviet states (Russia/Georgia, Russia/Ukraine, et al) settle their own boarder skirmishes, and let NATO stop playing World Police™️.

Europeans can twitter, whine, bitch, gripe, moan, offer excuses, debate and cry all they want but that won’t change a thing. They are going to have to FIGHT using their sons, NOT OURS, or Putin’s hordes will stick a bayonet up their behinds!

The only question is “Are there any “MEN” in Europe that WILL fight or are they all pussies and cry babies!!!? Some of us believe the latter.

NATO wasn’t creeping anywhere, the countries that escaped Russia try to join the defensive alliance, and now even Sweden and Finland are so shaken that they are trying to join NATO.

Russia does not run the world or Europe, and Ukraine shows what happens when you have no protection from Russia, that is why now, Moldova is considering trying to get into NATO.
