We are both dating ourselves if we can remember that. I always thought it was stupid, until I learned later on in life, that the THEORY was that gamma rays (the most lethal) only traveled in straight lines.

Of course, when your elementary school was on a major military base at the height of the Cold War, that ducking and covering probably wouldn’t have meant much.

Yup—nobody in the blast area is going to be “seeking” much of anything for a while—if at all.
The first responders who are mobile will probably be trying to find their own family members—and pretending their communications is out of order (if it in fact still works).
All the “rules” would get thrown out the window in that big a catastrophe.
During the Reagan years I lived in Tidewater Virginia. Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines and CIA are there. We used to joke that one day we’d be walking down the street and instantly become plasma.

Yep, absolutely. It will be basic survival of the fittest.
Remember the end of the Cold War and “peace dividend”? well that was nice while it lasted.
If you are within a mile of the blast, that is correct. What if you are 10 miles away? Thirty miles? At some distance, being under cover means you survive.
It is a little surreal isn’t it? Egos, greed, and government games and here we are...... a world on edge again.
