When that property is something big like a home or a car which is necessary to sustain life in a modern society, then it ought to be justifiable self-defense.
Stealing a horse was once a capital crime. Cars are today’s equivalent of a horse.
It doesn’t clarify whether this was a car-jacking or just a greasy little sh!t using a coat hanger to get in and take off. I’m not partial to greasy little sh!ts, but they don’t deserve to die without just cause, and the defendant stole a car to get away, so maybe he deserved to die by the same logic.
Nope. Sorry. That's murder.
What about home-—livestock-—other “Property”???
You try to steal my horses-—& I WILL SHOOT.
I concur...
Missouri law under Mo. Rev. Stat. § 563.031 provides that if you reasonably believe that deadly force is necessary to protect yourself or another against death, serious physical injury, or any forcible felony, you’re justified in doing so from certain occupied locations.
These locations are defined as your residence or dwelling, your lawfully occupied vehicle, private property you own or lease, and property you have permission to occupy. Further, the same applies if someone is unlawfully entering, remaining after unlawfully entering, or attempting to unlawfully enter your residence, dwelling, your lawfully occupied vehicle, private property you own or lease, and property you have permission to occupy.

Agree. That’s why horse rustlers were shot. Cause a man’s horse was his lifeline. Without his horse the man and family could die.
Justifiable defense of property > IMO.
We agree, but I believe there should be a defense of property statute.
If I’m making what used to be house payments on a car for five or
six years, I’m not going to smile and wave good-bye as some vile
sub-human starts to drive off in it.
Chasing him as he drives off. And then shooting him in the act,
good shoot > IMO.
To heck with the legislation governing such matters.
Missouri law is wrong.
When the guy is running away, and is not a threat you chase them down and kill them you are going to face murder charges in all 50 states.
He should not haave shot the perp when he was running away.
And especially in this circumstance, where if he let his car get stolen he would be stranded in St. Louis at 2 AM.
Here’s the common sense test to see if armed force is required.
If someone was stealing gov’t property would the gov’t be allowed to shoot that person? If so then it shouldn’t be a crime for the average citizen.
If the police were actually on our side, yes. But they aren’t.
